Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex

Rim fragment from a copper alloy vessel, probably of a type used for cooking. The fragment is 39.7mm long, 43.7mm wide, 3.6mm thick in the body and weighs 34.3 grams. The rim flares outwards at an angle of 120 degrees to the body and has an uneven edge. The rim is 10.4mm wide at the widest 4.2mm thick. The curve of the rim suggests the original vessel had a diameter of 24cm. There are traces of sooting on the outside, suggesting a cauldron or other cooking vessel.

A cast copper alloy pot leg and foot fragment. 45.1mm long, 30.7mm wide, 21.4mm thick and weighs 101 grams. The fragment is heavily worn but appears to be angled at about 60 degrees. The back is plain. The front has two vertical grooves creating a slightly tri-bobed appearence; just below the top is a raised horizontal band with a semi-circular profile. The top is smooth with slight grooves rather than broken and has a central raised, rough section that may have held a rivet. There appears to be traces of sooting on the foot, this, and its size, suggests it may come from a cooking vessel.

Copper-alloy early post-medieval hooked tag with a central circular boss, trapezoid loop and complete hook. The central boss is 11.9mm in diameter, 2.3mm thick and worn; it has a outer, flat ring decorated with short radiating lines; the central raised section may be decorated with the letters 'ihs' (for Jesus), although this is too worn to be certain. The back of the boss is mostly flat with an off-centre slightly concave oval area. The attachment loop is trapezoid, 11.1mm wide where it meets the loop and 12.8mm wide at the outer edge, the bar itself is 1.5mm wide and 0.9mm thick. Th…

A Medieval cast lead alloy seal matrix dating from the late 12th to mid-13th century AD. The seal is circular in plan and discoidal; it has been broken irregularly into two pieces, possibly from a post-discovery attempt to open the object up, which had been folded in situ. Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

An incomplete late early-medieval cast copper alloy buckle frame (c. 10th century). Approximately 2/3 of the frame survives, with three remaining protruding conical zoomorphic heads as decoration and a pronounced sub-triangular pin rest with central groove. The zoomorphic heads seem to consist of an elongated snout with two simple eye holes. The two heads that comprise an outer edge of the buckle frame flank the pin rest, with a simple frame in between the elements. However, the third head is connected to one of the outer decorative heads by means of a thicker bevelled frame segment w…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A complete Post Medieval silver gilt dress pin with hollow-cast spherical head, c. 16th century AD. The pin has been drawn from a thick silver wire 2.40 mm in diameter and the shaft measures approximately 72 mm long (including the section through the head) with a 90-degree bend about one third of the length up from the point. Such bends are a common feature of these pins and it appears to be purposeful, perhaps due to use. The pin tapers gradually to a point at one end and ends flat at the other. The flat end seems to have been pushed through and soldered into a highly-decorative head…
