The side petals of the trefoil have circular indents in their centre and the central petal is elongated, echoing a fleur de lis. There is a projecting solid rectangular knop at the base flanked by slight rounded knops and a solid chervon across the openwork centre. Early Medieval silver sceat dating to the period AD 710 to 740. Series X (type 31 Woden head / crested monster). Barrett type Ap (Metcalf 1993:279). Probably minted at Ribe, Denmark. North (1994: 65) no 116. Areas of copper alloy corrosion on both faces suggest it is debased silver. Analysis of a similar coin, although lighter and perhaps of less good design, in the Ashmolean collection found it had a silver content of 63% (Metcalf 1993: plate 16 no.208).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An extremely corroded and incomplete probable finger-ring of Roman date. The object appears to consist of a thickened bezel of rectangular form, rounded at the top from the ends of which extend shoulders and hoop in a continuous curve. The hoop has broken around halfway down each side with the truncated remains abraded to a point on both sides. The hoop is broadly D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat internal surface (int. dia.: c. 19.2mm). A dark-green patina survives in small patches, particularly on the underside of the bezel. Elsewhere the object is highly corroded with a green …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy four-way strap junction of post-medieval date. The piece is formed of four circular loops arranged around a central sqaure; one of the loops has broken through. The loops curve into the square's field. The central element is recessed apart from a central pellet, perhaps to take in inlay that has now been lost. While the upper surface is moulded the lower surface is flat. The piece has a red/brown colour with patches of light-green and off-white corrosion product. This, the form and finish, suggest a date for this piece perhaps in the 17th or 18th ce…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broken and incomplete figurative copper-alloy mount of medieval date (c. 12th/13th century AD). The mount would probably have depicted a saint full length, by reference to similar items discussed below; only the upper half of the torso and the head survive. The figure is shown facing holding a book in their right hand, through which a rivet hole has been drilled. An old break has occurred below this, largely diagonal, but also having removed some of the right arm. The body of the object is sub-rectangular and convex. The head above is moulded and set forward of the mount. A nose and…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame. Around a half of one of the buckle's loops has been broken away following old damage, with the outer edge gone completely and the sides surviving to differing extents above and below. The pin is also missing. The remaining oval loop is curved in cross-section due to a central recess between the sides of the buckle on the back. This is presumably a result of casting in an open, one-piece mould, whereby the metal has cooled and contracted. At the centre of the outer edge of the complete loop is an angled lobed kn…
