Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A solid copper alloy ring of unknown date and function, possibly a suspension ring or part of a chain for suspension. The ring is very regular in form and has a maximum diameter of 66.2mm that varies little across the ring. The hoop is similarly regular. In cross section it is an an isosceles triangle with the short straight edge being the inner edge of the ring. From the top and bottom of this inner edge the upper and lower surfaces taper to a rounded point marking the ring's exterior edge. The hoop has a maximum thickness of 4.8mm and is 8.8mm wide . The …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A pair of copper-alloy rings of a type often been suggested to be medieval or post-medieval harness rings (Geake 2001, 74), though they are typically undiagnostic. Further, Geake (ibid., 74) suggests that the broadly hexagonal cross-section which this ring possesses probably indicates a medieval date; they are bevelled slightly, externally and internally at the edge. A larger ring has a red/brown patina and measures 30.8mm in diameter externally, 23.7mm internally, 2.9mm thick, and weighs 4.81g. A smaller ring has a red/brown patina and measures 27.7mm in diameter externally, 20.3…

Object type: RING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy ring possibly of Iron Age date to early Roman date. The ring is broadly circular with a circular cross section. The ring has a dark-olive green patina with occasional pitting. The central hole is slightly off-centre or worn, so one side of the ring is thicker and wider (4.29mm, 4.16mm compared to 3.42mm, and 3.46mm). The ring is undecorated. It is 17.26mm in diameter, and weighs 3.94mm. While such a plain item is hard to date specifically. The patina suggests an Iron Age date, although a Roman date cannot be ruled out, Such rings might have been associated wit…

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy ring with hexagonal cross section and slightly uneven thickness and width of unknown date. The object is undecorated but has long striations around its outer face, probably from filing or wear, and with two areas of wear where the ring is thinner. Diameter: 27.4mm, width: 4.0mm, Thickness of loop from: 4.6mm, to: 3.3mm, Weight: 7.13g. Such rings are largely undatable and can be as early as Iron Age, but it is most likely a Medieval to Post-Medieval horse harness ring, possibly to link two straps given how it is worn in two places.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete tertiary retouched flake of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake has a visible bulb of percussion on the ventral face which has been partially removed by the very large bulbar scar due to a flaw in the flint. The distal end has snapped, as has the proximal right corner. There is short scalar abrupt retouch at the proximal end of the left edge and along the remaining part of the right edge of the dorsal face. Towards the centre of the left edge the retouch becomes longer and semi-abrupt. The flint is light-mid grey in colour.

A retouched flake which is possibly a retouched core fragment. There is no visible striking platform on the flake, on the ventral face there is a clear bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar. There are long flake removals in both directions on the dorsal face, suggesting a Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake has been snapped before the distal end and has evidence of retouch along the right side of the dorsal face from the proximal end to the break. The retouch is short and scalar, which creates a projecting knotch c. 4.5mm suggesting the flake was being fashioned into a tool b…

A knapped re-touched flint flake possibly later Neolithic to Bronze Age in date. A prominent bulb of percussion with large bulb scar and clear ripples of percussion are on the ventral face. There is original cortex surviving across the distal end. Aris and ripples on the dorsal face suggest multi-directional previous removals. They are both sub-rectangular in shape with numerous flake scars across the two dorsal faces. The larger of the two shows a natural break on the right dorsal margin, where the flint has sheered off forming an almost straight edge, there is an area of long scalar semi-abrupt retouch adjacent to the break, possibly an attaempt to create a notch that was abandoned. The dorsal surface, has three negative parallel flake scars. The ventral surface, has a small bulb of percussion at the proximal end with a bulbar scar and widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks indicating this piece was struck off at 180 degrees to the previous removals. A tertiary flake of probable Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date, reworked for use probably as a scraper. The flake is an irregular quadrilateral shape. The ventral face is curved and smooth with evident ridges down its length due to a heavy strike. The striking platform is obscured by scars and losses due to flaws in the flint; the bulb is now unclear. The dorsal face has two major and two minor multi-directional removals giving it a broadly triangular cross section.
