Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bent and incomplete medieval copper-alloy sheet buckle plate, decorated on its upper surface. The rectangular plate is wider than is long (see dimensions below), as is not uncommon for buckles of this period, with oval frames in particular (see Whitehead 1996, 19). The plate was formed of a folded sheet, with the upper half slightly longer than the lower one (L.: 19.25mm). At the attachment end there are two perforations, towards the edge and each corner; the rivets and in situ having thick, flat heads. They connect the upper sheet to the lower. In the centre of the plate, slightly …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete later Medieval cast copper alloy three dimensional zoomorphic mount or stud. The stud is in the form of an open-mouthed animal face with cross-hatching detail to the head, possibly intended to be a hat. The face has upturned ears protruding to either side of the 'hat' and two circular hollow recesses for the eyes which may have held glass or stones. The nose, which is sub-triangular in form is pronounced and below this the mouth of the animal, which may be intended to be a bear or dog, is open. The mouth is open at an angle between 45-90 degrees and may have been used to s…

Record ID: SOM-F5A5A2
Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Broken fragment of an invasively retouched arrowhead dating to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (4500-1500 BC). The remaining piece is almost triangular due to breaks, about three fifths of the original outline survives. The point and part of the attachment end is lost, making it unclear what the original form was, possibly leaf shaped. Both the dorsal and ventral faces are covered by shallow invasive semi parallel pressure flaking. The arrowhead is made out of translucent light brown flint, some cortex is visible on the centre of one side.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
2 cores and a core fragment. One shows clear evidence of neat parallel bladelet removals, the other is more ambigious and could have had blade or flake removals. The fragment has more irregular multi-platform work. This reflects the different stages of flint work present here (Mesolithic-Early Neolithic and Bronze Age). The two cores show evidence of working down to the nub extracting small flakes. The pieces vary from baige, to grey to black. The remaining cortex indcate pebble flint. The bladelet core weighs 11.78 grams, the second core weights 13.21 grams and a combined weight for …

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint single platform core, probably of Neolithic date. The flint is mottled and dark brown-grey in colour, with occasional lighter speckles in places and a glossy patina. Record ID: SOM-327C26
Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flake which is possibly a retouched core fragment. There is no visible striking platform on the flake, on the ventral face there is a clear bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar. There are long flake removals in both directions on the dorsal face, suggesting a Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake has been snapped before the distal end and has evidence of retouch along the right side of the dorsal face from the proximal end to the break. The retouch is short and scalar, which creates a projecting knotch c. 4.5mm suggesting the flake was being fashioned into a tool b…
