Arms: Clare, de and Zouch, la.
While many enamelled horse harness pendants have been recorded by the PAS, some double sided, this one is unusual in have different coats of arms on each side. It may relate to Eleanor de Clare, co-heiress to Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hereford, who married William la Zouch in 1329.

The buckle measures 31.3mm by 21.3mm, is 2.6mm thick and weighs 5.9grams. It is tinned on the front surface and this has suffered less from corrosion.
The loop is rectangular, 21.3mm long and 12.4mm wide, it has a notched lip forming a pin rest which is 5.4mm long.
The integral plate is broken by an old break with the remaining piece being 16.7mm long and 16.2mm wide. It is constricted after the loop to 14.1 mm wide, then curves outwards in a semi circular lug on both sides to 16.2mm wide, is constricted again to 10.8mm wide, then expands out in a straight line to it's maximum width before breaking. It is pierced with four holes, the largest (4.2mm diameter) in the constriction by the plate then three in a row, one in each of the semi circular lugs (2.5mm in diameter) and a small one in the centre (1.5mm in diameter). At the broken end it is shaped into two bars, 3.4mm wide, each running diagonally outwards from the centre with a empty space beteen them; whether this space was enclosed on the other side forming a diamond shape is not clear due to the breakage. It is also not clear if it was riveted to a strap through the remaining holes or if further rivet holes existed in the lost portion.
Although no direct comparison was found it is similar in style to those shown in Whitehead (2003) pages 34 and 35 and thus a date of c.1250 to 1400 is suggested.Daniel Pett31.37YaptonSUSS-79861420586541MEDIEVALBUCKLERestricted Accessfinds-2058651121.36SUSS-796AF41250x14221images/jefft/116201200147879834017DC42008-01-11T16:24:20ZCertainx1422112007-09-30T23:00:00Z029MEDIEVALCopper alloy41421MD1Circa29http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/MEDIEVALCertainCivil Parish2022-07-14T07:08:02.444ZWest Sussex100CountyStamped1CertainMetal detectorSUSS-E18B20.jpg164172007From finderGeorge_I_of_Great_Britain116289PM0.6DistrictCertain423173SUSS1643815.3Warningcampx410470.9Arun11728Twopence2011-02-24T13:49:34ZReturned to finderSouth EastSilver twopence of George I (1714-1727), minted 1727. Copper-alloy early post-medieval hooked tag with a central circular boss, trapezoid loop and complete hook. The central boss is 11.9mm in diameter, 2.3mm thick and worn; it has a outer, flat ring decorated with short radiating lines; the central raised section may be decorated with the letters 'ihs' (for Jesus), although this is too worn to be certain. The back of the boss is mostly flat with an off-centre slightly concave oval area. The attachment loop is trapezoid, 11.1mm wide where it meets the loop and 12.8mm wide at the outer edge, the bar itself is 1.5mm wide and 0.9mm thick. The hook is curled backwards in a spiral, over more than a complete circle, and comes to a point; it is D-shaped in cross-section, 3.1mm wide where it meets the boss, narrowing gradually to the end. It has been bent slightly off to one side. The entire piece is 26.1mm long, 12.9mm wide, 6.3mm thick and weighs 1.8g. A struck silver Post Medieval escalin of Albert and Elizabeth of Austria, ruling in the Spanish Netherlands. Coin probably minted in Hertogenbosch in 1617. Obverse depicts an eagle with the shield of Austria-Burgundy on breast; legend reads: ALBERTVS [ET ELISABET] [...] [GR]ATIA. The reverse depicts the crowned shield of Albert and Elizabeth on St. Andrew's Cross; legend reads: AR-CHID.AV[S] [...]. Cf. World Coins 1600-1700, ref. KM# 47.3, page 1212. Most of these coins are undated or are later, from Brabant or Antwerp mints. However, it is suggested that coins displaying the date '1617' such as this one originate from the mint of Hertogenbosch only.

A Medieval cast lead alloy seal matrix dating from the late 12th to mid-13th century AD. The seal is circular in plan and discoidal; it has been broken irregularly into two pieces, possibly from a post-discovery attempt to open the object up, which had been folded in situ. It has been decorated on the outer seal face with an indented octofoil, which is surrounded by the legend: SIG' M[A]TILDIS : DE : hOD[...]IA . The location listed on the seal matrix has not been identified. The lead alloy is of an uneven light to medium grey colour, with the darker areas corresponding to along the break in the object. It measures 35.45 mm diameter, 2.27 mm thick and weighs 17.9 grams.

An incomplete late early-medieval cast copper alloy buckle frame (c. 10th century). Approximately 2/3 of the frame survives, with three remaining protruding conical zoomorphic heads as decoration and a pronounced sub-triangular pin rest with central groove. The zoomorphic heads seem to consist of an elongated snout with two simple eye holes. The two heads that comprise an outer edge of the buckle frame flank the pin rest, with a simple frame in between the elements. However, the third head is connected to one of the outer decorative heads by means of a thicker bevelled frame segment with repeated indentations; these indentations are now discoloured with a vibrant red. There are breaks at the end of the third head's snout as well as one of the outer heads, indicating where another portion of frame broke off. It is likely that a fourth head may have been present originally and that the buckle was more of a rectangular shape. The remains of the frame have been bent and twisted around, so that the two broken surfaces are touching.
The fragment measures 32 mm wide, 6.1 mm thick and weighs 8.95 g.
This buckle can be compared with an example from Old Sarum, Wiltshire, published by Hinton (1974, 60; no. 32). Its zoomorphic decoration has been described in terms of the Borre style which would date it from the late 9th to the late 10th century. It can also be compared to a local example recorded on this database, SUSS-438A54.

A complete Post Medieval silver gilt dress pin with hollow-cast spherical head, c. 16th century AD. The pin has been drawn from a thick silver wire 2.40 mm in diameter and the shaft measures approximately 72 mm long (including the section through the head) with a 90-degree bend about one third of the length up from the point. Such bends are a common feature of these pins and it appears to be purposeful, perhaps due to use. The pin tapers gradually to a point at one end and ends flat at the other. The flat end seems to have been pushed through and soldered into a highly-decorative head. Only a very small circular end of the pin protrudes from the top of the spherical head.
The cast hollow spherical head measures 10.54 mm in diameter and has filigree and applied knop decoration. It has been divided by a raised border of possibly twisted wire filigree, the surface of which has been flattened, into two hemispheres. The lower hemisphere has been decorated with three circles of twisted wire filigree each containing three smaller circles of twisted wire with an applied knop in the centre of each, one of which is now missing. There are small circles of twisted wire forming a base for applied knops in each of the three spandrels between the circles and the upper band. One smaller circle is missing its knop and may have been made of plain instead of twisted wire.
The upper hemisphere is decorated with three twisted wire circles surrounding the central protruding pin top; each of the circles contains a small one made of twisted wire and placed centrally, serving as a base for a knop. One of the knops is missing. Similar to the other hemisphere, there are small circles of twisted wire forming a base for applied knops in each of the three spandrels between the circles and the lower band.
At the junction of the head and shaft is a soldered silver loop, which is intact. The entire pin-head retains traces of gilding, with a pale golden surface colour in recessed areas and silver raised filigree areas.
Spherical-headed dress pins were used by women to secure dress or hair during the sixteenth century. This pin is of a type that is frequently reported as Treasure, under the Treasure Act 1996. The addition of a loop below the head is not common on these pins but other examples are known e.g. SUSS-C10BD8 (2010T64), ESS-FE0D98 (2008T166) and NMGW-AEBC43.
