Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The broken bowl from a cast copper-alloy 17th-century post-medieval spoon. The handle and the majority of the bowl are missing, both from old breaks. The handle is rectangular in cross-section; on the lower surface it tapers to a point at its junction with the bowl. The surviving section of the bowl is shallow and has been bent upwards at the extant terminal, with breaks to each side. There is evidence on the bowl for a circular makers mark, central on the upper surface, which is now unclear but possibly a (Tudor) rose (as with SOM-7C2A26 on this database). The lower surface is plain.…

A corroded, plain copper-alloy rivet-like object which might have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. It is sub-oval in plan with a possibly break giving a broadly straight edge to one side. On the lower surface there is an integral protruding prong towards this edge whose terminal protrudes to one side and is flattened at the base. Rolled sheet rivets replaced the earlier folded sheet rivets in pot repairs from the late 15th - 16th centuries (Egan 2005, 101) suggesting a possible late medieval to post-medieval date for this piece. It is of a red-brown metal with patches o…

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is biconvex, with one surface having received steeper bevelling than the other. The top is flattened and the base is slightly concave. It is basic and has suffered corrosion. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a spindle hole with a diameter of 6.4mm. The spindle whorl is 7.9mm thick and weighs 16.01g.
It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton …

A cast copper-alloy foot from a cooking vessel of later medieval to post-medieval date. The foot is sub-trapezoidal in plan with a rounded complete end. The other end has a ragged break, possibly as result of mis-casting, which extends beyond the break. A prominent median rib, semi-circular in cross-section, runs down the length of the leg. The plain object is a dusty light-green colour overlying a red-brown metal, with large areas of off-white corrosion product.

A bent and corroded part of a cast copper-alloy sheet plate from a buckle of uncertain date. The object is sub-trapezoidal in shape. It tapers gradually from a width of 10.8mm at the attachment end to 7.0mm towards the terminal, beyond which the sides curve to a (now abraded) rounded terminal. At the opposite end there is an off-centre tab; the tab on the other side has been lost. This is a pair of rivet holes at the frame end with a third hole central at the terminal. The object has corroded to an orange-brown colour, with large patches of light-green and off-white corrosion produc…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A broken copper-alloy sheet plate from a medieval strap-fitting, probably a buckle plate. The fragmentary plate is rectangular and features a pair of rivet holes at the attachment end; it has broken at a further hole at the centre of the sheet. The attachment end has been bent, then down at its terminal. The corners are slightly abraded and rounded at the attachment end; one of the perforations has a crack between it and the side. Corrosion has robbed us of any decoration, if indeed it existed; the artefact is now a variable mid-green colour with patches of lighter corrosion product.

A broken copper-alloy sheet plate from a medieval strap-fitting, possibly a buckle plate. The fragmentary plate is sub-rectangular, ragged at both short ends following old breaks. There is perforation near the centre of the extant sheet. One end has been bent upwards. On one surface are stamped lozengiform punches, representing a central pellet within a linear border, all within a ropework border. They are arranged in four corners of a square, two aligned with the perforation, two at one of the breaks; there is a possible fifth at the centre of the group. The artefact is now a variabl…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A medieval copper-alloy strap-fitting, possibly a strap-plate or strap-end, consisting of a rectangular sheet folded over on itself. There is a central circular perforation on both halves; above and below are smaller rivet holes. The sides of the object has been damaged in the past. The artefact now has a variable mid-green patina with some areas of lighter corrosion product. For similar see Egan and Pritchard (1991, 225; fig. 141) and Margeson (1993, 39; fig. 22). Such objects tend to have been found in 14th-century contexts.

A corroded fragment from a cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The fragment consists of the lower part of the mount, including the hook and the lower part below a rivet hole. Within this lower rivet hole corroded remains of an iron rivet. The sides of the mount are scalloped with rounded protrusions to the sides. The inward-turning hook has been bent slightly to one side as a result of old damage. The metal has corroded to a red-brown colour with larges areas of light-green and off-white corrosion product.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy artefact: possibly a toggle of Late Iron Age/early Romano-British date. The piece is of simple construction - it takes the form of a dumbbell with a central waist (5.8mm).
