It tapers gradually from a width of 10.8mm at the attachment end to 7.0mm towards the terminal, beyond which the sides curve to a (now abraded) rounded terminal. At the opposite end there is an off-centre tab; the tab on the other side has been lost. This is a pair of rivet holes at the frame end with a third hole central at the terminal. The object has corroded to an orange-brown colour, with large patches of light-green and off-white corrosion produc…

A continental copy of an Edwardian penny issued by John the Blind of Luxemburg, King of Bohemia. This coin dates to after he became King of Bohemia in 1310 AD and before he relinquished his claim to the Polish throne in 1335 AD. Meyhew suggests they are relatively early in that period (1983, p103-4) probably 1310-1325 AD. They are usually fine silver (90%+) but a debased (50%) example is known of Mayhew 261. It is probably fine silver but gone brown due to being in iron rich Wealden clay (Mayhew 1983, 267-262).

A possible cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, possibly from a medieval annular buckle although it is unusually large. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. It narrows (from 7.45mm to 2.4mm) as it tapers to a pointed tip which is bent downwards slightly. The 'loop' is of unusual form and seemingly broken. It the same plane as the shaft it is sub square in form with incurved sides. It bends upwards before turning through a right angle. Beyond this the surviving edge is crudely curved. The size of this object points to…

Medieval cast lead-alloy circular uni-faced token. The token has a raised design of square topped shield with a chequey pattern on one side. The reverse of the token has an raised five petalled flower. Above the shield is a piercing through the token, possibly secondary. It is 22.1mm in diameter, 3.1mm thick and weighs 6.14 grams. A number of familys bore a chequey coat of arms including the locally prominent de Warrene family (in use 1066-1415). Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally, they are therefore hard to date precisely. The piercing and use of a coat of a…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval - Modern cast lead two disc cloth seal. The disks sit one on top of the other and are joined by a tab. One had a hole in the centre and the other a projecting point which has been pushed through the hole and then stamped flat to fix them together. The tab is mostly missing from old breaks. The stamp has the initials R.W. The discs are bent and at most 27.4mm in diameter, 3.7mm thick and it weighs 14.22 grams. The simplcity of the design of initials rather than a privy mark suggests a later date, 17th-18th century (cf Egan p.84, no.234, 236 and p.86, no.242)

An incomplete cast copper-alloy early Roman bow brooch, probably best classified as being a Colchester derivative type. The narrow head is cylindrical formed by rolling forwards, as with a strip-bow type, although the thickness of the bow is closer to the Roman hinge-headed types. Retained within the head is an axis bar, around which the pin's head survives. All that is left of the shaft is a mere vestige; the head has a spur to the rear to aid springing. The bow is rectangular with rounded corners in cross-section. It tapers gradually towards the catch-plate end. After an initial ris…
