A damaged fragment from a cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date (17th century AD). The fragment consists of the pin bar with small parts of the flat sides emerging at one end. The pin bar has a double lobed knop extant at one end. It has a square cross-section and has been bent twice from opposing sides as a result of old damage. Orange/brown corrosion product at its centre suggests that the missing pin was made of iron. The object otherwise has a variable mid-/dark-green surface colour. A double-looped buckle with double lobed knops at the ends of the p…

A lead disc, blank on one side and with an impression of the obverse of an VRBS ROMA Roman nummus. For similar impressed objects, see this database at: LON-8C0467, WAW-013507 and LIN-FE2DF8, which has been described as a probably metal working hoard, or maybe a forgers hoard.
A suggestion by Dr. Martin Henig for LON-8C0467 was a tessera used possibly as a pass to allow entry into a military building or the Baths, for example. An alternative possiblity is as a seal, but theer are no holes for the attachment of cord.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy artefact, probably a strap fitting such as a strap union, or perhaps a harness fitting or mount. It probably dates from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 800 BC - AD 100.
The object is incomplete, but appears to have been symetrical. It consists of a pair of opposed triangular loops, both springing from a central block. The block is square in profile, but narrow when viwed from the front, rather like a square collar. It is decorated with incised border lines on the front, upper and lower faces. Projecting from the back of the central element is a circular sectioned…

Cast lead vessel repair (pot mend). It is roughly oval in plan and bullet-shaped with two irregularly shaped outer pieces of oxidised, white-patinated lead, one larger than the other, sandwiching a fragment of the original ceramic pot. The larger lead piece is slightly concave while the smaller piece is domed. The pottery has a bright orange fabric, possibly due to reheating with the mend with abundent coarse sand temper, patinated chert inclusions up to 1mm and occasional rounded ironstone suggesting a greensand derived fabric of local type . The pot mend is 19.6mm long by 18.5mm wid…

An incomplete curved copper alloy handle for a vessel, probably dating to the post-medieval period, however it has not yet been directly paralleled and an earlier date cannot be ruled out. The handle is triangular in cross section with a slghtly convex curved inner face and ridge running down the centre of the upper face. It narrows from the break at one end to the break at the other. At the bottom thinner end there is a raised section on the front that may have been part of the decoration or indicate the start of the terminal. The curve of this fragment can give an indication as to t…

The flat surface of the handle has the design of a long cross pattee engraved onto the surface, the arm running parallel to the handle is longer than the other. A coin hoard of four copper alloy cartwheel pennies of George III, Birmingham mint second issue, dated 1797 (Spink p.417 no.3777). Probably a chance purse loss. One penny has been deliberately bent in two places and drilled through. As this modified coin was found in a group with other pennies, suggested to be a purse loss, it can be inferred that, despite the modification, the coin would still have been an accepted item of tender.
