Seven cast lead vessel repairs (pot mends). All have the characteristic H-shaped section with two irregularly shaped outer sides, one larger than the other, joined by a smaller central section. None of them retain any of the original pot in the grrove created between the outer sides. Total weight 70.04 grams. Pot mends of this form are found in both Roman and Medieval periods, as a common way to repair broken pottery vessels. The lack of any vessel material left in the groove means they cannot be dated directly but they are likely to be Roman given the other material on the site.

Two flint scrapers. Horseshoe scraper made on a large primary flake. Clear bulb on the ventral face. The dorsal face is covered in cortex, the thickness suggests it is not pebble flint. Short, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch around the semi-circular distal end. Pale grey flint, 15.24 grams. Thick fragment of a core with c. 10% cortex on the dorsal face suggesting it is pebble flint. The bulb has been removed form the ventral face. The left edge and distal end are a semi-circular edge with short, semi-parallel, shallow to semi-abrupt retouch. Dark grey flint with paler mottling, …

Two fragments of ceramic building material, both roughly quadrilateral in form. They both have oxidised surfaces, one light orange, the other mid orange. They both feature yellowy inclusions and seams from where the clay has not been mixed fully. Respectively, they measure 55.9 by 48.7 by 12.0mm and 74.55 by 36.6 by 12.4mm; a combined weight is given below. They are plausibly medieval in date given their thickness, although a Roman date ought not to be ruled out.

Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy spherical animal ('crotal') bell of post-medieval date (c. 17th century AD). The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top is 6.9mm in length. The curve of the bell continues under the loop suggesting it was made using the detachable sprue-piece method developed in the 17th century. The upper and lower hemispheres are divided by a prominent horizontal circumferential rib. At either side of the suspension loop, about halfway down the side of the upper hemisphere, is a circular sound hole. Across the lower hemisphere is a rectangular sound slot opening into a circul…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and slightly damaged copper-alloy single-looped buckle frame of medieval date. The frame is an elongated D shape oval with a narrow and offset bar; the pin is missing. The sides are rounded. There is a small triangular nick that acts as a pin rest at the centre of the outer edge on both surfaces. There is a small rectangular tab on the internal surface of the pin bar, possibly unfinished. This buckle has been distorted to one side in plan. The object has corroded to a variable mid-green colour. The form is unusual; most buckles of elongated D shape tend to have a knop on …

A copper-alloy composite three-piece button of post-medieval date (c. 17th century). The sheet button consists of a pair of hollow die stamped hemispheres soldered together. There is a small perforation, or blow hole, either side of the separately attached round, drawn wire loop/shank. A detached element is lodged within the object and rattles around when shook, but it is assumed that this is not a pea as with a bell. The head is plain, but corroded with a red-brown colour with traces of off-white and green corrosion product, and some tinning or possible solder around the shank. The h…

Object type: GUNFLINT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval/modern gunflint from a flintlock musket. The flint is broadly rectangular in plan. The ventral surface is smooth and relatively flat; the strikes come in at an angle; the bulb of percussion is absent. The dorsal face is bevelled on all sides, more shallowly towards the distal end where the bevelled area widens, and very haphazardly at the proximal end due to frost fracturing. There is some retouching to the distal end. The flint is a mid- to light-grey/brown colour. The relative crudeness of this gunflint suggests that it may have been a replacement generated in the field.

Post Medieval lead cloth seal, of two disk type. Only one disk now survives with the projecting attachment on the back. The second disk and connecting strip has been lost or broken away and the break is worn. The front has a raised design of a large letter A flanked with annulets. There are the remains of a pellet border around the edge of the disk, very worn in places. It is 19.3mm by 18.5mm and 4.3mm thick; it weighs 5.63 grams. The 'A' design indicates it originates from Augsberg, Germany and the reverse disk would probably have had a pinecone; the heradlic badge of the city (Eg…

Object type: RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded, cast copper-alloy ring in the shape of a letter 'C' of uncertain date and function. It has a sub-oval cross-section, being flattened to the wider faces. It tapers to a point at either end; one end has been bent down slightly. The mid-green patina is mostly lost; the object is generally a corroded light-green colour over a red-brown metal. Scratching to reveal the shiny metal internally is assumed to be a recent intervention. Objects of similar form, although generally smaller size, have been recorded on this database and are often interpreted as Roman earrings.

A thick strip of decorated cast copper alloy bent around into a penannular form, possibly a finger ring of Roman date that was formed from a bracelet. The strip has slightly abraded edges and now has a maximum width of 16.3mm. It has a flat inner side and slightly convex outer face and is 1.9mm thick in the centre. Around the front runs a decorative panel marked by indented lines at the top and bottom. Two further grooves within these create ridge above and below a wider central band. The ends are slightly rounded but do not appear to be the original ends of the strip as the panel run…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged copper-alloy medieval sheet plate possibly from a medieval buckle. If this attribution is correct than half of the plate survives; it would have been created from a broadly rectangular strip twice the length. It is rectangular with a pair of neat perforations at the attachment end; neither rivet survives. There is some abrasion at this end which has broken into one of the holes. The other end shows hints of a central recess for a pin although this is unclear. Just in from this end is a perforation which retains a square sectioned rivet with hammered down end. The location …
