A post medieval copper alloy penny token issued by Messrs. Cox of Taunton and dating to AD 1812 (Minnitt unpub:18 nos. 1 & 2).
The obverse shows a view of an iron foundry. In the background are the furnaces with a gantry projecting between them. In the foreground is a man carrying a bar for tapping the furnaces and at his feet are four bars of pig iron. The legend reads TAUNTON PENNY TOKEN. The reverse bears the insciption in four lines [A POUND/NOTE/FOR 240/]TOKENS in the centre with PAYABLE [AT MESSrs] COXS IRON FOUNDRY. The edge of the token is thread milled. It measures 34.48mm…
