Part of an Early Medieval copper openwork alloy strap end dating to the 10th and 11th centuries. The piece is the middle part of the strap end with both the terminal and attachment end lost to old breaks. The strap end was tounge shaped with sides converging slightly towards the rounded terminal. It has an openwork pattern of a central stem from which splits symmetrical side branches which curve up and down to form the outer side before curving back in to the central stem. The ends of the branches are formed of oval lobed terminals. This leaves a regular series of holes to each side o…

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap-end of early-medieval date of Thomas Class B. The object is broadly rectangular and has a square zoomorphic terminal with rounded edges and corners that is sub-rectangular in cross section. This terminal is worn but has the remains of raised brow ridges with an indented channel between and raised circular nostrils at the lower corners. At the top of the terminal is a bend/crack where the piece has almost broken in two, this damage obscures any indication of the top of the terminal. From this terminal the sides of the object run parallel for app…

An incomplete cast copper alloy 'lyre shaped' strap end dating to the Medieval period (1375-1425). It consists of a box like upper and open work lower section, now mostly missing The body of the strap end is trapezoid in plan and rectangular in cross section. It is cast complete with front, back and sides all integral, the top is open. The front is decorated with incised lines probably forming a black letter M surrounded by a incised border. It appears to have once been gilded as a very small amount of gilding survives. The reverse is undecorated. At the open attachment end are tw…

An early-medieval cast copper alloy strap-end, classified as Thomas's (2003, 2) Class A, Type 2. This would date the artefact to around the 9th century AD. The strap-end is flat in profile and sub rectangular with slightly convex sides and squared off zoomorphic terminal. The plate narrows from a width of 10.56mm at the widest point to a width of 6.20mm at the base. The strap end is slit down the side creating a slit between the front and back for the upper third, this would have held the end of the strap. The top edge (attachment end) is formed of two lobes on the front and back…

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval item, probably a strap end, or possibly a buckle plate dating from the 13th to 15th century. It is probably part of a composite strap end with spacer. The remaining part is a single sheet representing the front of the strap end. The strap end is sub-rectangular in shape and tapers towards the end, suggesting a pointed or rounded end. The strap end had two rivets attached, one at the centre near the top, the other centred near the bottom; both are now missing. Description: The attachment end of a silver-gilt strap end of later Medieval date with zoomorphic decoration. The strap end is trapezoid in shape, narrowing towards the broken terminal and rectangular in cross section. It is box like, formed of separate front and back plates and side strips with an open rectangular centre. At the complete end are two separate silver rivets, roved over flush with the front and back. An incomplete copper-alloy strap-end of Medieval date. The piece represents the projecting end from a socketed strap-end. It is of thin section, flat on the underside, and takes the form of three equal-sized discs, arranged in an inverted-sub-triangular formation. The surface of each of these discs is concave and has been incised with a number of parallel, angled grooves, probably designed to catch the light. This effect would have been enhanced by the addition of a now-corroded white metal coating. At the top of the piece is a remnant of the short arm that would have joined this pr…

A corroded and damaged early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end, classified as Thomas' (2003, 2) Class A, Type 2. This would date the artefact to around the ninth century. The strap-end has a flat, rectangular cross-section and sub-oval in form. It is curved in profile as a result of old damage. The split attachment end is rounded through abrasions. Its upper fold has been all but lost and the lower fold is so abraded that the usual pair of rivet holes cannot be discerned. The artefact tapers gradually towards the terminal which is more pointed, but still rounded at the tip. The zoo…

A corroded cast copper-alloy medieval strap-end made of a single strip folded in half widthways. In shape it is a simple rectangular with rounded corners, some of the rounding may be from wear. There is a single rivet which appears to be cast integrally with the front and then roughly hammered flat after going through the strap and a hole in the back-plate. The flattened end of the rivet is sub square. The strip is notably thick (Th.: c. 1.9mm); this has helped result in a fracture to one side of the fold that extends up one face. The strap-end seems to have been squeezed together j…

A copper-alloy thick sheet fragment probably from a medieval strap-end (c. 14th century AD). The fragment is sub-square and flat. It is abraded on all sides, but comparison with published strap-ends suggests that it survives almost complete in width, but with significant longitudinal losses above and below. The upper surface of the sheet plate is decorated with incised lines. A central pair of longitudinal lines has incised diagonals running between them at roughly equal intervals. Either side are diverging diagonals forming trapezoidal zones; above and below would have been triangles…

An incomplete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy strap-end, dating from the 9th century. This is an example of a Thomas Class A strap-end, with a split end, outward bowing sides, and probably a zoomorphic terminal, which has subsequently been lost, along with some of the tapering strap-end body (cf. Thomas 2003, Datasheet 32). The split end has a central notch which creates a bi-lobed edge. Two silvered circular rivets fit at the split end, one in each lobe. An incomplete Medieval (1400-1450) copper alloy composite crescentic strap end with trefoil projection, missing its backplate. It measures 42.85x29.53x2.95mm and weighs 8.7g. The cast upper plate is crescental with remains of iron rivets at the points where the crescent ends join to form a circle. In shape the plate is roughly D-shaped with a wide outer edge, much narrower edge, and oval opening 13.46x15.68mm. To the reverse it is hollowed with a c.1.5mm wide rim running around much of the edge (but not the narrowed edge or the trefoil projection). Two further rivets are still in si…

Two copper alloy rings, formed of a double loop of square sectioned wire the ends and middle of which are attached to each other and to the top of a knop. The knop has a circular top to which the wire is attached below which is a constriction then a oval terminal. Both the loops and terminal are complete with no breaks suggesting it was suspended from another obect through the loops. It is 20.1mm long, 16.6mm wide and the wire is 1.2mm thick; it weighs 1.06 grams. It is unclear what this is from. The finder has suggested a parallel with a wire looped terminal on a Medieval …

An incomplete and damaged spacer plate from a medieval composite strap-end with stylised collared acorn knop terminal cast in copper alloy. The collared acorn knop (10.55 long) is relatively well rendered with nut and fruit moulded. One of the prongs is vestigial following an old break. The other has been bent upwards and then back on itself.  The plates are now missing; the spacer is recessed for them above the terminal. This area has been filed diagonally to aid adhesion. Similar strap-ends can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 144; fig. 94) and date to the 14th or …

A corroded cast copper-alloy openwork strap-end of early-medieval date (Thomas Class E, probably Type 1). The object is sub-rectangular with a thin attachment end (Th.: 2.35mm), recessed to one side. The attachment end has been abraded at the corners and bent slightly as well. It bears a pair of rivet holes around the centre. Below this end the object continues at the same width, with wavy sides.
