A medieval copper alloy mount dating to the period c.AD 1350-1400 The mount has a large central domed boss that is decorated with five horizontal grooves. Either side of this central lobe is a circular domed lug with a separate small copper alloy rivet running through a hole in the centre to secure the fitting to the strap or belt. The rivets are complete with roved ends, one bent to the side. The reverse is concave behind the central boss and end lugs. There are traces of a green patina on the upper surface. The mount measures 20.12mm in length, 9.65mm in width and weighs 1.80g. …

Post Medieval cast copper mount dating to the 16th or 17th centuries. The mount is in the form of a large circular boss with a projection to one side. The boss has a hollow back and convex front which rises in two steps to a central dome, between the first and second step is a double incised ring. The edges of the boss are irregular and slightly damaged but it seems probable there was only ever one projection. The projecting piece is in the form of an oval lobe with a smaller lobed terminal beyond, both are convex on the front and the larger lobe has a hollow back. From the back of th…

Post Medieval mount dating to the 17th century for a leather item. The flat plate of the mount has a tri-lobed end with a narrowed waist underneath, the lobes each side being thin and curved out, one now bent forward at the tip. This waist then expands forming rounded shoulders before a constriction formed of indents coming in from both sides below which it expands again to a square plate with outwardly curved corners. Below the square is an incised line across the front then a wider collar with rounded ends and possibly a broken lower edge. On the back are two integral attachment s…

A copper alloy possible livery badge, strap mount or belt fitting of probable Later Medieval to Post-Medieval date circa (AD 1400-1800). The object is in the form of an arrowhead made to look like the barbed and tanged type. The broad arrow is similar to a Medieval 'Pheon' arrowhead. The object has a triangular plate with a pointed upper edge, the tip of which is missing to an old break, and two opposing long 'barbs' that have a rounded point, one 'barb' is missing to an old break. At the base of the triangle is a central projecting tang or stem which is sub rectangular in plan, wi…

Post-medieval copper-alloy mount. Cast oval plate with a trilobate knop at one end and a smaller rounded knop at the other. Two thick short integrally cast pins (of diameter and length 3mm) project from the flat back. The display face bears a balanced motif of a long shafted cross springing from between what appear as leaves or petals, all these motifs being rendered as enamel filled cells. The putative leaves now retain a dull red degraded enamel, while the borders are mainly dark blue on one side, and mainly white on the other, though each has a pair of small areas of the opposed ti…

Post Medieval cast copper-alloy openwork mount with integral attachment spikes. The mount has a flat openwork plate with bevelled edges which is general piriform in shape with the top point elaborated into a trefoil. The side petals of the trefoil have circular indents in their centre and the central petal is elongated, echoing a fleur de lis. There is a projecting solid rectangular knop at the base flanked by slight rounded knops and a solid chervon across the openwork centre. On the back are two integral circular sectioned spikes with sharp points. They are placed on a central line,…

A corroded post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount of c. 17th-century date. It has a flat trapezoidal body with bevelled edges on its upper surface. From the narrower end of the body an initially wider triangular protrusion emerges. From the wider end of the body is an initially narrower circular protrusion. From the flat back two integral prongs would have emerged. One no longer exists; its attachment scar is located at the centre of the circular terminal. A prong emerges from one of the bases of the triangular terminal, as such completely off centre. The prong curves inward to the cen…

A corroded post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount of 17th to 18th-century date. It has a flat oval body. From each shorter end of the body protrude a slightly raised trefoil terminal and flared terminal respectively. Each terminal features a pair of crude grooves to delineate the designs. From the flat back emerge two integral prongs. These spring from circular bases at the trefoilate terminal and the junction of the body with the other terminal. Only stubs of the prongs survive; they appear to be of rectangular cross-section. This mount has corroded to a red/brown colour. Such mounts …

An incomplete and rather worn copper alloy gilt Late Early-Medieval asymmetrical mount in the English Urnes style (c.1000-1100). The mount is in the form of a protruding animal head terminal modelled in relief, at the end of a long neck of a Urnes-style quadruped which forms a spiral loop, so that in plan, the mount has the shape of a ragged-edged rounded-cornered lozenge, with a single long projecting knop (the zoomorphic head and neck) leading from one corner. Copper alloy Mount. Cast concavo-convex mount comprising a smiling human mask in a hat or hood, with a backward pointing blunt hook rising behind it. Below the mask a miniature torso is represented with a pair of crooked ball-ended arms springing from it, and a circular loop, probably for an attachment rivet, below. The hollow mask is slightly thickened close to the hook, suggesting allowance for its use, perhaps fastening a strap. The facial features include a high brow, a broad triangular nose perhaps flattened by wear, and lidded eyes with bags beneath them. A tight fitting hat …

A cast copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date (c.AD 1600-1750), plausibly a harness fitting. The mount has a heart-shaped plate that is very shallowly convex at the front and concave at the rear. At the narrow end there is an integral fleur-de-lis-shaped protrusion, bent down slightly at the tip. The central element of this feature is pointed and the two side fleurs are small and rounded, set at right angles to it. There is a V-shaped groove on the upper surface of the mount about halfway along which gives more definition to the heart shape. Below this, and above the lis terminal, …

The sides of the mount are bevelled subtly on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. A copper-alloy mount in the form of a Tudor rose of post-medieval date (16/17th century AD). This small mount is essentially flat and in the form of a double five-petalled rose with small pointed lobes in the cusps. The centre of the upper surface is moulded in low relief with five arms emerging from a central point to join the side of the internal rose. Between each arm a small spur springs from the side of the internal rose; thus five heart shaped cells are created. In one of these white enamel survives in place. In an adjacent cell formed between the roses is red enamel, and w…

A broken and incomplete figurative copper-alloy mount of medieval date (c. 12th/13th century AD). The mount would probably have depicted a saint full length, by reference to similar items discussed below; only the upper half of the torso and the head survive. The figure is shown facing holding a book in their right hand, through which a rivet hole has been drilled. An old break has occurred below this, largely diagonal, but also having removed some of the right arm. The body of the object is sub-rectangular and convex. A copper-alloy sheet binding, sub-circular in plan, of probable post-medieval date. The piece has suffered a longitudinal crack but it has only been slightly distorted in plan. An upper zone from just below the cusps is delineated by a double longitudinally incised line; the area below is plain, as is the internal surface. A cast copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The piece is flat and sub-oval in plan with an oval shape missing one end where there is a straight edge which may be complete or an old break. The front is decorated by a central dot with a large incised circle around it. Between this circle and the edge are three circular perforations for attachment. They are arranged in a triangle and the arrangement suggests the straight edge was not attached to an object in the same way as the opposite end. It may suggest the straight edge is original or possibly had a projection from it. Although plai…

Post Medieval, 17th century, cast copper alloy openwork mount with integral attachment spikes. The mount is flat and shaped into four lobes, two large pointed oval lobes alternating with two smaller circular lobes. The tip of one of the pointed oval lobes is lost, possibly to damage.
