A copper-alloy plate from a Medieval single-loop buckle (cf. PAS record NMS-5D2021). The plate is roughly semi-circular in plan, the two projecting tabs at the straight end representing the remains of the fold which would have extended into the now-missing back plate. Just inside the outer edge is an incised ropework line. There are three domed-head rivets, arranged in a triangular formation, their points flattened underneath. The upper surface of the plate retains much of its gilding. The piece measures 15.4mm long, 21.5mm wide and 5.6mm thick (0.8mm thick not including the riv…

A silver penny (voided short-cross type). The reverse of this irregular coin (see obverse description) has been doublestruck, making exact identification difficult. It is, however, probably a Class 4b coin, minted between 1200 and 1204, during the reign of John (ref. North 1980: 178, no. 968/2). It measures 19.7mm in diameter, 0.3mm thick and weighs 1.35g.

A copper-alloy Nuremberg Rose/Orb jetton of 16th century date. The legends on this piece appear to be nonsensical, suggesting it is an annonymous issue struck between c. 1500 and c. 1550 (see Mitchiner 1988: 377). The obverse has three crowns and three lis arranged alternately around a central rose. The initial mark is a crown and the legend reads: ...]G BLIOA[.... The reverse bears the Reichsapfel within a double tressure of three curves and three angles, each point being flanked by a pair of pellets. The reverse legend reads: ...........]MOA[... The jetton meas…

A cast lead token of Medieval date. The circular token is of thin section but survives intact. On one side, executed in low relief, is the image of a hooded figure standing right, the right hand holding a pole with a mesh bag at the upper end. A swag extends diagonally across the body, while the top of his legs - the area below the knee is not visible - are covered with a vertically segmented garment. The left arm bends upwards from the elbow, the hand holding a stylised cup, from which the figure drinks. The other side of the token is occupied by a shield containing a plain chevron…

Only traces of the red enamel survive and the gilding has also been lost. The suspension loop is set at a right-angle to the top edge and consists of a flattened, sub-oval plate with a circular aperture. The reverse of the pendant is flat and plain. A silver crockard (continental imitation of an English long-cross penny) of John II of Avesnes, minted at Valenciennes. This coin is classified as Mayhew nos. 28 or 29 (1983: 39), due to the uncertainty of form of the letter 'N' on the obverse. Mayhew suggests a date of 1280. The coin's surfaces are worn. A copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval (probably 14th century) date. The printing face is shield-shaped, the central image and legend well executed. The image appears to be a caricature of a lion's body with a man's head. The lion is in a heraldic pose, standing rampant regardant - ie. standing on its hind legs, the head turned back towards the tail. The legend, which starts at 12 o'clock, reads '*PRIVE SVY E POV CONV', a previously recorded seal legend (see Harvey and McGuinness 1996: 117 (variant)) which roughly translates as 'Private to you and little known'. The handle is of hex…

An incomplete copper-alloy strap-end of Medieval date. The piece represents the projecting end from a socketed strap-end. It is of thin section, flat on the underside, and takes the form of three equal-sized discs, arranged in an inverted-sub-triangular formation. The surface of each of these discs is concave and has been incised with a number of parallel, angled grooves, probably designed to catch the light. This effect would have been enhanced by the addition of a now-corroded white metal coating. At the top of the piece is a remnant of the short arm that would have joined this pr…
