Object type: COSMETIC SPOON
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified copper-alloy artefact. The widest part of the artefact is located a short distance below centre, where there is a cylindrical moulding with a simple grooved and ridged moulding at either end. A rectangular-sectioned bar projects upwards from above this moulding, tapering towards the apex, where it terminates in what appears to be the remains of a loop. Projecting below the cylindrical moulding is a flat-sectioned piece which decreases in thickness as it flares towards the distal end, where longitudinal grooves divide the surface into three segments, the central one …

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy strap-end of Medieval date. The piece represents the projecting end from a socketed strap-end. It is of thin section, flat on the underside, and takes the form of three equal-sized discs, arranged in an inverted-sub-triangular formation. The surface of each of these discs is concave and has been incised with a number of parallel, angled grooves, probably designed to catch the light. This effect would have been enhanced by the addition of a now-corroded white metal coating. At the top of the piece is a remnant of the short arm that would have joined this pr…

A Roman copper-alloy Aesica variant brooch, dating from the 1st century AD. The brooch would have been of the sprung variety, the wings taking the form of a horizontal cylinder, joined on the underside. At either end this cylinder curves upwards, terminating in a sub-circular setting, one of which contains traces of an unidentified white material. The iron axis bar is visible within a central slit in the underside of the wings. It is at this point that the now-missing pin would have been hinged. The arched bow has straight, parallel sides at the top, each edge marked by a vertical g

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval (probably 14th century) date. The printing face is shield-shaped, the central image and legend well executed. The image appears to be a caricature of a lion's body with a man's head. The lion is in a heraldic pose, standing rampant regardant - ie. standing on its hind legs, the head turned back towards the tail. The legend, which starts at 12 o'clock, reads '*PRIVE SVY E POV CONV', a previously recorded seal legend (see Harvey and McGuinness 1996: 117 (variant)) which roughly translates as 'Private to you and little known'. The handle is of hex…

A copper-alloy plate from a Medieval single-loop buckle (cf. PAS record NMS-5D2021). The plate is roughly semi-circular in plan, the two projecting tabs at the straight end representing the remains of the fold which would have extended into the now-missing back plate. Just inside the outer edge is an incised ropework line. There are three domed-head rivets, arranged in a triangular formation, their points flattened underneath. The upper surface of the plate retains much of its gilding. The piece measures 15.4mm long, 21.5mm wide and 5.6mm thick (0.8mm thick not including the riv…

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy Nuremberg Rose/Orb jetton of 16th century date. The legends on this piece appear to be nonsensical, suggesting it is an annonymous issue struck between c. 1500 and c. 1550 (see Mitchiner 1988: 377). The obverse has three crowns and three lis arranged alternately around a central rose. The initial mark is a crown and the legend reads: ...]G BLIOA[.... The reverse bears the Reichsapfel within a double tressure of three curves and three angles, each point being flanked by a pair of pellets. The reverse legend reads: ...........]MOA[... The jetton meas…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bent and corroded copper-alloy horse harness pendant of probable 14th century date. The pendant takes the form of a spade-shield bearing a heraldic device of Or fretty gules (gold lozenges on a red background) - this appears to be the arms of the de Verdon family. Only traces of the red enamel survive and the gilding has also been lost. The suspension loop is set at a right-angle to the top edge and consists of a flattened, sub-oval plate with a circular aperture. The reverse of the pendant is flat and plain. The object measures 45.5mm high, 27.8mm wide and 6.8mm thick. The wei…

An incomplete copper-alloy object, representing a fragment of a candlestick dating to the post medieval period. The object comprises half of a hollow tubular body and an incomplete curving top. The tube is lozengiform in cross section, and tapers towards the top. The top has approximately a quarter of a loop remaining.
