A Roman copper-alloy Aesica variant brooch, dating from the 1st century AD. The brooch would have been of the sprung variety, the wings taking the form of a horizontal cylinder, joined on the underside. At either end this cylinder curves upwards, terminating in a sub-circular setting, one of which contains traces of an unidentified white material. The iron axis bar is visible within a central slit in the underside of the wings. It is at this point that the now-missing pin would have been hinged.
