Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint scraper of probably Bronze Age date or AD 2500 to 800. The scraper is struck off a tertiary flake and retains no cortex. The scraper is sub-rectangular in plan albeit with one slightly curved mesal side. Every edge is heavily chipped and damaged but behind this damage is evidence of semi-parallel abrupt retouch along the majority of their ventral surface while the distal edge demonstrates this semi-abrupt retouch on its dorsal surface also. There is a very prominent bulb of percussion and the flake has removed a large part of a striking platform with it, giving it …

It is almost flat in cross section, with a defined, thinned edges leaving a low central rib on both faces. At the hilt end the remnant of a flared tang with a semi-circular hole on either side for missing rivets. Both faces have some raised and uneven corrosion products, particularly at the tang end. Two Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age fragments of tertiary flint implements. The fragments are trapezoidal in shape and are worked bifacially. One fragment is of translucent pale grey flint with a covering, stepped and low angle retouch on one side and semi-abrupt on the other; it has slightly convex faces and is transversally broken at the proximal end. The second fragment is of translucent pale brown flint with a covering, sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch all along, except for the proximal end wheer there is a transverse break; it has considerably convex faces giving a pointed ova…

Probably a palaeolithic flint tool reused in the later prehistoric period, possibly as a knife or other cutting tool. The tool is of a dark brown/black flint, rolled and with significant areas of iron staining. At more recent removal scars the flint can be seen to be mottled with cloudy white areas and rare white inclusions. The tool is D-shaped in plan, and with a truncated pointed oval cross section, with the dorsal face being more pronouncedly curved than the ventral. The initial working of the tool is bifacial, with covering, sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch on the dorsal fac…

A Flint borer, probably Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, c. 3300-1000 BC. Worked from a tertiary flake of very dark brown/black flint with some grey/brown patches near proximal end. No striking platform survives, with a relatively diffuse bulb of percussion although with a bulbar scar. There are three flake removal scars on the dorsal face, all seemingly blade-like flakes, with two struck from the proximal end, both terminating in hinge fractures, and a third struck at a perpendicular angle, all three have relatively pronounced ripple marks. This last removal appears to have gone w…

A Bronze Age or possibly Neolithic chert horseshoe shaped scraper dating to the period c. 2350-800 BC. It has been struck off a secondary flake, as there is between 25-35% of the cortex remaining on the dorsal face and was semi-circular in shape with some damage to one side which has removed one end of the semi-circle. The ventral face has a single large bulb of percussion, with a large bulbar scar. The dorsal surface has three parallel negative flake scars from previous removals of blade like flakes. The curved distal edge has neat short semi-abrupt parallel retouch at the ends close…

An early Bronze Age flint scraper dating to the period c. 2350-1600 BC. It is semi-circular in shape, with 50% of the dorsal face still covered in the origianl cortext and weathered pebble surface. It has been struck off a secondary flake, as it retains >25% of its cortex. The ventral face, has a single low bulb of percussion with a bulbar scar and widely spaced, conchoidal rippple marks, suggesting that the artefact has been soft hammer struck. The curved edge of the dorsal face has evidence of acute short- parallel retouch running along the entire length. The flint is a translucent …

A knapped flint retouched flake, possibly a side and end scraper of probable Bronze Age date (c. 2350-800 BC). The piece is struck off a secondary flake with 10% of the cortex remaining on the dorsal face. The piece is broadly triangular in shape, narrowing along its length to a rounded apex. The dorsal surface exhibits three narrow negative flake scars from previous removals. The ventral face has lost it's bulb of percussion to damage but has weakly defined widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks. There is scalar to sub-parallel, semi abrupt short retouch running aroudn the corner of…

A Bronze Age retouched flint, probably a scraper dating to the period c. 2350-800 BC. The artefact is struck off a secondary flake, as the dorsal surface retains 25%of its cortex, it is broadly triangular in cross section and ovoid in shape. The bulb of percussion on the ventral face has been almost removed by bulb scarall the edges. All the sides have bad chipping, some later damage but some may be deliberate blunting to make the opposite edges easier to use. The flint is light grey in colour with a series of buff to cream coloured inclusions, and some traces of iron staining fro…

A collection of six retouched chert flakes of probable Bronze Age date (c.2350-1600 BC) . Two of the flakes, are tertiary retaining no cortex, while the remaining pieces retain between 5 and 25% of their cortex. All of the ventral surfaces, have large bulbs of percussion and strongly defined, closely spaced conchoidal ripple marks idicative of the use of a stone hammer. All the flakes are broad, with evidence of short sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch running along one mesal edge, probably for use as scrapers. One (top right in photo) has long parallel semi-abrupt retouch around the cu…

Possibly a cast copper alloy awl or tracer. About half the length is square-section (maximum 6mm across) and fairly even in width, the other half is rounded and narows gradually and terminates to a point. there is no obvious waist where the two sections join. 82mm long and weighs 9.4 grams. Plain copper alloy awls are hard to date precisely and this lacks the characteristic central thickening of some Bronze Age examples. Plainer examples are known however and as an artefact they were introduced in the Bronze Age (2150-800 BC) with most being Late Bronze Age in date (1150-800 BC).…

Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c.2700 BC to c.1600 BC) probable plano-convex knife: The knapped flint knife is an elongated pointed sub-oval, with a D-shaped cross section. The dorsal surface has scaled retouch covering the surface with low abrupt re-touch along the edges, thereby forming a convex surface. Along one lateral edge, in the medial section there are two notches, next to each other, which have been formed from the dorsal surface. The ventral surface has some invasive retouch, mainly to reduce the bulb of percussion. One portion of the proximal side edge has low ab…

Description: 1. Copper alloy side-looped palstave, Transitional Type. The palstave has high petal shaped flanges, and three ribs which run from the centre of the stop ridge, and end approximately a quarter of the way down the blade in a triangular/trident shape, roughly parallel to the end of the side-loop. The body of the palstave is narrow but widens down the blade eventually flaring at the cut…

A large lump of copper, it's rounded appearence suggests it has cooled from molton metal in a crucible or other mould. One side is almost flat, the top is domed and the sides rounded, it may originally have been oval as it appears to have been cut on one face, the cut is now worn. It may have been made on site or have been carried here for metal working. It is difficult to give this item an exact date although study of the composition might help, a date of Bronze Age - post-medieval has thus been given although it is likely to sit within the earlier part of this range. It is 38.8mm l…
