Copper alloy heraldic shield-shaped horse harness pendant. The pendant itself measures 35.9mm long, 26.6mm wide and is 2.9mm thick. The suspension loop is rotated at 90 degrees to the pendant and measures 6.5mm long, 4.6mm wide and 3.7mm thick. The entire item weighs 10.78grams. The pendant has enamelled coats of arms on both sides, the coats of arms are in red and gold; made of red enamel on the original, gold coloured, brass of the pendent. An incomplete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy strap-end, dating from the 9th century. This is an example of a Thomas Class A strap-end, with a split end, outward bowing sides, and probably a zoomorphic terminal, which has subsequently been lost, along with some of the tapering strap-end body (cf. A cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon saucer brooch, dating from the mid 5th to mid 6th centuries AD. The brooch is incomplete, missing some of the rim, the pin and part of the catch plate. The brooch has traces of gilding on the front with a raised design of a central circle surrounded by five running spirals or scrolled tendrils. All of this is bounded by an outer circular border which has regularly spaced transverse indents. The reverse has the remains of the single lug to hold the hinge with traces of iron corrosion. There is a copper alloy circular rivet at the strap attachment end and a further circular rivet just above the protruding acorn-shaped terminal. A complete Post Medieval silver gilt dress pin with hollow-cast spherical head, c. 16th century AD. The pin has been drawn from a thick silver wire 2.40 mm in diameter and the shaft measures approximately 72 mm long (including the section through the head) with a 90-degree bend about one third of the length up from the point. A complete continental sterling imitation of a Medieval long cross penny, issued by William of Hainaut, Bishop of Cambrai (1285-1296 AD). Mint: Cambrai; double-pellet stops. This sterling coin is from the latter half of his episcopate, dating to c. 1290-96. The obverse depicts a bust facing front with rose wreath instead of crown; the obverse legend reads: + GVILLS:EPISCOPVS. The reverse depicts a long cross pattee with three pellets in each quadrant; the reverse legend reads: CAMERACENSIS. Cf. Mayhew 1983, No. 88.
