An incomplete and rather worn copper alloy gilt Late Early-Medieval asymmetrical mount in the English Urnes style (c.1000-1100). It has five incorporated holes, presumably for rivets (now missing), three of which are worn through and incomplete. The mount is in the form of a protruding animal head terminal modelled in relief, at the end of a long neck of a Urnes-style quadruped which forms a spiral loop, so that in plan, the mount has the shape of a ragged-edged rounded-cornered lozenge, with a single long projecting knop (the zoomorphic head and neck) leading from one corner. A corroded cast copper-alloy Roman strap mount often described as 'vulvate' as the central motif is thought to imitate a vulva. The mount is sub-rectangular in form with a central raised oval boss (14.6 by 10.1mm). The short ends are squared off while the longer ones curve outwards slightly. The boss features a central longitudinal incision along most of its length. The lower surface is slightly concave towards its centre, either side of which two integral, fungiform studs would have protruded; one is now broken and vestigial. The broken bowl from a cast copper-alloy 17th-century post-medieval spoon. The handle and the majority of the bowl are missing, both from old breaks. The handle is rectangular in cross-section; on the lower surface it tapers to a point at its junction with the bowl. The surviving section of the bowl is shallow and has been bent upwards at the extant terminal, with breaks to each side. There is evidence on the bowl for a circular makers mark, central on the upper surface, which is now unclear but possibly a (Tudor) rose (as with SOM-7C2A26 on this database).
