A copper alloy Roman (AD c.300-410) possible buckle plate. Overall, it measures 25.66mm long and 25.17mm wide, and weighs 5.65g. It is formed from a broadly quadrilateral plate with three loops projecting from one of the edges. The piercings of these loops are c.1.5mm in diameter and are aligned with each other parallel to the plate. The plate itself has two open work circles in it which are c.6mm in diameter. There are three rivet holes, each filled with iron corrosion product, arranged in a triangle, two on the side with the loops and one in the centre of the opposite side. The i…

A copper-alloy ring, undiagnostic, but plausibly a medieval annular buckle frame, of conventional module (c. 14th century AD). The frame consists of a ring of circular cross-section. There is a thinned and narrowed area at one point, which was perhaps provision for a pin; as no pin survives it is impossible to definitively classify this as a buckle. As there is neither a constriction nor a pin rest the artefact has been recorded (tentatively) as a buckle rather than a brooch (see Egan and Pritchard 1991, 57). Many examples of annular buckles have been found in London in 14th-century c…

A cast copper-alloy rectangular single-looped buckle of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1400-1700). The buckle's rectangular frame has rounded corners on the outer edge. It is square in cross-section with some rounding to the outer edge. Looped in situ is a thick wire pin which has corroded in the same manner as the frame. The buckle's form is not diagnostic hence the large date range offered.

A damaged fragment from a cast copper-alloy rectangular double-looped buckle frame of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1350-1700). The buckle would have had two rectangular loops that share a pin bar and retains a central, integral sub-rectangular tab on one side which has a sub-rectangular opening. This frame, including the tab is flat on both faces, other than some slight bevelling around the edges on the upper face. This fragment consists of much of one of the sides as demonstrated by a break at the return to the outer edge at one end; the other part of the side has been br…

A fragment from a late Roman cast copper-alloy openwork buckle plate. The fragment appears to be the corner of the plate at the frame end. The frame end is defined by a transverse ridge at the on the upper surface, towards one end of which is an integral loop. The loop is 6.05mm thick and perforated to take the axis bar around which the frame would have hinged. It is defined at its lower edge adjacent to the ridge by a transversely incised line; there is a further longitudinally incised line at the internal edge on the upper surface. The plate beyond the ridge has a flat lower surfa…

A damaged copper-alloy medieval sheet plate possibly from a medieval buckle. If this attribution is correct than half of the plate survives; it would have been created from a broadly rectangular strip twice the length. It is rectangular with a pair of neat perforations at the attachment end; neither rivet survives. There is some abrasion at this end which has broken into one of the holes. The other end shows hints of a central recess for a pin although this is unclear. Just in from this end is a perforation which retains a square sectioned rivet with hammered down end. The location …

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date, complete with pin. The loops are oval and are bevelled both externally and internally on the upper surface; the former is far shallower. The lower surface is flat giving the frame a sub-triangular cross-section. At both ends of the pin bar is a pointed knopped protrusion. Loosely looped at the centre of the bar is a copper-alloy cast pin of semicircular cross-section. In profile one of the loops has been bent upwards on one side at an angle of c. 10 degrees. The buckle has a shiny, dark-green patina where it survives ove…

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface, the latter more shallowly; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. The pin is now missing. The buckle frame has corroded to a variable mid/dark-green colour. Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been found in late medieval contexts (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 82-83; refs. 332-333), but as the form persi…

A cast copper-alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. One loop of the buckle is rounded, with two projecting lobed knops, top and bottom, and the other half is rectangular, with five equally-spaced transverse notches on the outer edge which form six lobed knops. At each end of the pin bar there is a further lobed knop. The pin is now missing; iron staining around the pin bar and outer edge reveals the pin's composition. The buckle has a flat reverse, while the upper face is bevelled both internally and externally to the loops. The tinning on the buckle ha…

A slightly bent medieval copper-alloy thick sheet plate, elaborately decorated on its upper surface, probably from a medieval buckle. What remains of the rectangular plate is slightly wider than is long (see dimensions below), as is not uncommon for buckles of this period, in particular those with oval frames (cf. Whitehead 1996, 19). At the attachment end the perforation at each corner has been abraded through; the rivets have been lost. At the other end the is broken, with any connecting strips now gone. A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval plain double-looped buckle frame. The frame is missing one of its loops after an old break at the pin bar. The surviving loop is trapezoidal, with a flat lower surface and an upper surface which is bevelled externally. This gives the frame a triangular cross-section, while the pin bar is semi-circular in section. There is a knopped protrusion at each end of the pin bar. A possible cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, possibly from a medieval annular buckle although it is unusually large. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. It narrows (from 7.45mm to 2.4mm) as it tapers to a pointed tip which is bent downwards slightly. The 'loop' is of unusual form and seemingly broken. It the same plane as the shaft it is sub square in form with incurved sides. It bends upwards before turning through a right angle.
