A Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative developed T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. AD 80-160. Only the head and upper part of the bow of the brooch survive. The wings measure 20.98mm in width and are rectangular with an integral projecting cylindrical bar across the back to hold the hinge (now mostly missing and abraded) and a sub-rectangular slot cut into the centre of the reverse to accommodate a hinged pin. Areas of iron corrosion suggest the hinge bar and possibly the pin were iron. The bow is D-shaped in section. There are worn traces of a broken integral headloop at …

A rare, copper-alloy dupondius of Severus Alexander (AD 222-235), minted in Rome, AD 229. RESTITVTOR MON reverse type depicting the emperor standing left with spear. Ref. RIC, Vol. IV, Part II, p.118, no. 601. Severus Alexander apparently struck this coinage in connection with an 'enigmatic ... '"reform" in c. 229 celebrated with dupondii inscribed Restitvtor Mon (Alexander standing) and Mon Restitvta (Moneta standing). The nature of this event is a mystery, though it may be a celebration of the effectiveness of Alexander's decision in 222 to abandon the inflationary double-denariu…

A Roman copper alloy finger ring fragment consisting of the bezel and the adjacent parts of the hoop. The hoop on one side protrudes by c2mm while on the other side it extends for c6mm, the tapered point having been bent inwards. The rest of the hoop is missing to old breaks. The bezel is flat front and back and octagonal in plan, the rounding of the corners giving it a almost oval shape; it is set transversely to the hoop. A base fragment of a greyware ceramic vessel dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43 - 410). The base is almost flat, with wear marks and more recent scratches on the underside. There is very little of the vessel's body that remains adhered to the base, but there is enough to suggest an open profile vessel form, too little survives to estimate the diameter. The fragment is a blue-grey in colour, with brownish patina. The hard fired fabric is non-micaceous with abundant very fine sand temper and occasional rounded iron stone inclusions. The sherd measures 12mm in length, 49.3mm in width, …
