Object type: END SCRAPER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An end scraper. There is long, parallel, abrupt retouch around the proximal end on the ventral face, removing the striking platform. There may also have been very short, abrupt retouch on the distal end to produce an irregular outline, although this may also be due to natural fracture when the flake was sruck from the core. Unlike with thumbnail or round scrapers the retouch covers only a small part of the circumference. The scraper was made on a secondary flake, c.5% cortex remains, with a prominent bulb of percussion. The flint is pale grey with mottled lighter grey inclusions. The s…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint bladelet with a bulb of percussion visible at one shorter end and a hinge fracture at the other; it is rounded at this latter end. The flint is a light grey colour with some patches of iron staining. There are two removals down the length of the flake on the dorsal face while the ventral face is smooth, as struck. The edges are serrated, but no obvious human retouch can be discerned. The object has the following dimensions: Weight: 3.24g, Length: 40.33mm, Width: 18.86mm, Thickness: 3.51mm. It can be dated broadly from the Mesolithic to Neolithic.

Knapped flint tertiary blade struck off a prepared platform with possibly retouch at one end. The blade is long, trapizoid in section rising to triangular at the distal end and slightly curved in profile. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion at one end, percussion waves and several damage scars down the right and left edges. At the right edge of the distla end on the ventral face is a short length of regular short semi abrupt chipping, probably retouch, the distal tip beyond is broken. The dorsal face has two parallel arises from previous removals and damage from mis-strikes a…

2 cores and a core fragment. One shows clear evidence of neat parallel bladelet removals, the other is more ambigious and could have had blade or flake removals. The fragment has more irregular multi-platform work. This reflects the different stages of flint work present here (Mesolithic-Early Neolithic and Bronze Age). The two cores show evidence of working down to the nub extracting small flakes. The pieces vary from baige, to grey to black. The remaining cortex indcate pebble flint. The bladelet core weighs 11.78 grams, the second core weights 13.21 grams and a combined weight for …

A Mesolithic blade fragment. The blade is broken above the distal end so there is no visible striking platform or bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The dorsal face has two paralell arises. The blade has a light grey patina on the surface, at the break the patina is a mid brown. The blade fragment is 19.25 mm in length, 11.75 mm wide and weighs 0.65 grams.

Probable Microlith of later Mesolithic date. The piece has a sharp triangular point with an irregular, accidental, break at the wide end. The piece is made from the centre of a tertiary blade with the point towards the proximal end and a broken distal end. The dorsal face is highly arched with evidence for previous removals. There is short, scalar to sub-parallel abrupt to semi-abrupt retouch around the tip of the point and down both sides as far as the break. The flint is dark grey with paler mottling. It is 23.2mm long, 11.3mm wide and 3.6mm thick; it weighs 1.08.

Three fragments of flint cores. Total weight: 65.48g. 1. Blade core with long parallel removals from one end, c.20% cortex on one face at distal end, mid to pale grey, 30.41 grams. 2. Blade core with long parallel removals form one end, break at the distal end, c.5% cortex on dorsal face, mid grey flint with pale mottling, 14.20 grams. 3. Remains of a core, the removal scars are mostly for small flakes but there are also many mis-hits at the proximal end on the dorsal face and distal end on the ventral face. This suggests an attempt to use the core down to the smallest fragment,…
