Part of a medieval or post-medieval cast copper alloy pot leg and foot. The leg is sub-trapezoid in section with a narrower, slightly convex back and flat front. It is broken off just above the foot. It widens to terminate in a flat, extended foot, which, when placed on a flat surface, sets the object at an angle and has a D-shaped imprint with a straight front edge. The object has a worn green-brown surface. The broken edge is abraded. The object is 46.7mm in length, 39.4mm in width and 23.3mm in thickness. It weighs 96.5g. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used f…

Three body sherds that refit to become one fragment of a Medieval cooking pot dating to c. AD 1150 to 1350. The sherds are both highly abraded and have been reburnt giving them a hard brittle feel. Each of the sherds are predominantly reddish orange in colour with one large surface being a burnt blackish brown colour from burning. Each sherd has common rounded ironstone and patinated chert inclusions up to 2mm and 2.5mm respecively. When refitted the fragments total length is 38.6mm, while their total width is 28.6mm. their maximum thickness is 7.4mm while they weigh a total of 8.64 g

A copper alloy fragment from the end of a handle of a cooking vessel possibly a posnet or skillet of a later medieval or early post-medieval date, AD 1300-1600. The handle has a D-shaped cross section with a flat upper surface. The flat surface of the handle has the design of a long cross pattee engraved onto the surface, the arm running parallel to the handle is longer than the other. The back has numereous holes caused by air bubbles during the casting process but is otherwise plain. There is an old break where it continued to the rest of the handle. The terminal is stepped down…

Cast lead vessel repair (pot mend). It is roughly oval in plan and bullet-shaped with two irregularly shaped outer pieces of oxidised, white-patinated lead, one larger than the other, sandwiching a fragment of the original ceramic pot. The larger lead piece is slightly concave while the smaller piece is domed. The pottery has a bright orange fabric, possibly due to reheating with the mend with abundent coarse sand temper, patinated chert inclusions up to 1mm and occasional rounded ironstone suggesting a greensand derived fabric of local type . The pot mend is 19.6mm long by 18.5mm wid…

A cast copper-alloy vessel foot or leg dating to 1200 to 1650. The object has one central rib running vertically down its length the cross section is triangular, the back is flat and the front is convex. The leg rose from the foot at an angle of 70 degrees. Reference: Butler et al type 4a, who suggest they are widespread in the medieval period but also up into the 17th century. Date: Medieval to Post Medieval. Length: 40.9mm. Width: 37.2mm. Thickness: 18.6mm. Weight: 100.53g.

Rim fragment from a late Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper- alloy vessel. The fragment is triangular in shape. It is 25.0mm along the curved top, one side is 26.3mm long, the other is 19.6mm long. The rim is plain, thinning on the innerside to a sharp edge then quickly thickening to 3.0mm thick down the length. It originally angled straight out at c.45 degrees and is not dished. The internal surface is smoother than the outer. On the outer face 9.0mm below the rim is a pair of ridges running around the circumference of the vessel, each emphasised by indented lines of var…

A large copper-alloy fragment of broadly rectangular form: possibly a broken handle from a medieval/post-medieval posnet or skillet. At one broken end of this bar the fragment has a rectangular cross-section, twisted as a result of old damage. This end is thinned (9.7mm) compared to the other end (14.8mm) which has a more oval cross-section, though with flat 'upper surface'. This latter end has also suffered a ragged, old break; it was more likely the end attached to the vessel. In general the upper and lower surfaces of the bar are flat, while the sides are slightly bowed and cur…

A Medieval to post-Medieval leg/foot from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel (c. 1250-c. 1650 AD). The object is trapezoidal in cross-section throughout its length, wider at the front than the back. On the front there is a central vertical rib. The base is flat and the top ends in an old abraded break. It is 36.3mm long,27.8mm wide, 29.2mm thick and weighs 79.69 grams. Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th century and to have continued at least until c. 1650 (Geake 2001, 52).Butler, Green and Payne (2009, pg 4) suggest that this form (th…

A cast copper-alloy medieval or post-medieval vessel leg or handle. It has been mis-cast, the front and one side appear complete. The back and one side is missing. The current back surface is flat and there are metal runs, probably signs of mis-casting where the metal does not seem to have completely filled the mould, leaving one side of the leg mis-shapen rather than broken. The leg is trapezoidal in plan, wider at the point where it would have attached to the body of the vessel and tapering to the terminal; a square end with rounded corners, one corner of which is missing to an old …

A fragment of a Medieval or Post-Medieval copper alloy vessel rim. The rim is slightly thickened with a slight swelling on the inner side. The outer surface is roughly cast and covered with soot, the inner surface is smooth. The curve of the fragment suggests the vessel was 200-240mm in diameter but from such a small fragment it is hard to be certain. The fragment is 38mm long and 24.3mm wide, and its thickness varies from 1.6 mm to 3.5mm near the rim. It weighs 9.68 grams.

Cast lead vessel repair (pot mend). It is roughly oval in plan and H-shaped in section with two irregularly shaped outer sides, one larger than the other. In the groove created between the outer sides there are fragment of the original pot. The pottery has a bright orange fabric. The whole object measures 48.0mm long, 25.4mm wide and 12.4mm thick. It weighs 70.5g. Pot mends of this form are found in both Roman and Medieval periods, as a common way to repair broken pottery. The fabric appears similar to Medieval cooking pots although it is too fragmentary to be completely certain.

Butler, Green and Payne (2009, pg 4) do not record an example identical to this but it is perhaps most similar to their Type 'a' which was widespread in the Medieval period with examples known into the early 17th century.

A rim sherd probably from a medieval cooking pot (c.1100 - c. 1400 AD). It has a pale grey-brown silty fabric with c. 15 - c. 20% medium quartz temper; the inclusions have leached out slightly on the surfaces. The piece has a rolled over rim projecting at ninety degrees on the outer face (Th.: 12.45mm); below the edge it has a slightly concave inner side and convex outer. It is too small and irregular to identify the original diameter.

A cast copper alloy pot leg and foot fragment. 45.1mm long, 30.7mm wide, 21.4mm thick and weighs 101 grams. The fragment is heavily worn but appears to be angled at about 60 degrees. The back is plain. The front has two vertical grooves creating a slightly tri-bobed appearence; just below the top is a raised horizontal band with a semi-circular profile. The top is smooth with slight grooves rather than broken and has a central raised, rough section that may have held a rivet. There appears to be traces of sooting on the foot, this, and its size, suggests it may come from a cooking vessel.
