An incomplete lead alloy medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla dating to the period c.AD 1350 - 1530. The object is flask-shaped with an oval lower part and wide trapezoid neck above ending in an old, irregular, torn break at the top. It is hollow, with one side loop and small traces of a second. The object's lower portion has one side which is smooth and plain and the other side bears traces of a possible pattern. On one side the pattern is a type of elaborated cross or flower with probably a central equal armed cross, the upper arm is unclear, the side and lower arms end in ovals with …

Probably a Medieval or post medieval cast lead alloy cup weight from a set of nested weights, dating to c. AD 1300-1600. The weight was originally open in profile, having a circular base with the sides flaring up to a wider rim. It has been compressed and one side is now folded inwards, although the original base area remains relatively unaffected. The flat rim surface itself is decorated with a motif of repeated raised circles, which continue around the full circumference. No other decoration survives, but a possible attachment point is visible on the flat side, where two circular…

Medieval lead-alloy pilgrim's ampulla dating to c. AD 1350 to 1530. It is flask-shaped in plan with thinned elongated neck that expand slightly toward the mouth and a rounded lower body. The mouth measures 22.8 mm in width and is now squashed. The neck measures 16.4 mm in length. It is covered by multiple horizontal raised lines running across both sides, but more evidently on the front. A sub-triangular suspension loop projects from either side at the juncture of the body and the neck. On one side the loop is squashed backwards. The lower body is decorated on both sides. On the fr…

Cast lead vessel repair (pot mend). It is roughly oval in plan and bullet-shaped with two irregularly shaped outer pieces of oxidised, white-patinated lead, one larger than the other, sandwiching a fragment of the original ceramic pot. The larger lead piece is slightly concave while the smaller piece is domed. The pottery has a bright orange fabric, possibly due to reheating with the mend with abundent coarse sand temper, patinated chert inclusions up to 1mm and occasional rounded ironstone suggesting a greensand derived fabric of local type . The pot mend is 19.6mm long by 18.5mm wid…

A Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy token of Powell type 3. The token is circular in plan and is undecorated on the reverse. The front is domed or convex and has a motif of radiating lines or sunburst pattern; approximately half of this has worn away. A lead token with similar radiating lines, which is dated from AD 1675 to 1700, is illustrated in Egan (2005: p170; number 932). However, as the Devon item did not come from a dateable archaeological context, it can only be given a broad date.

Fragment of a cast lead alloy pointed-oval or vesica-shaped seal matrix dating from the medieval period, that is the 13th/14th century. Only the lower half survives. The matrix would have read: [S' I]Oh'IS FIL WALT[ERI] This means it was the Seal of John, Son of Walter. There appears to have been a star or similar in the centre of the matrix and moulded ribs on the reverse. The suspension loop is missing along with the upper part of the matrix. NB: The find was not seen by the FLO. Images and findspot information were kindly supplied by the rally organiser.

Cast lead alloy pointed-oval or vesica-shaped seal matrix dating from the medieval period, that is the 13th or 14th century. A Medieval cast lead alloy seal matrix dating from the late 12th to mid-13th century AD. It has been decorated on the outer seal face with an indented octofoil, which is surrounded by the legend: SIG' M[A]TILDIS : DE : hOD[...]IA . The location listed on the seal matrix has not been identified. The lead alloy is of an uneven light to medium grey colour, with the darker areas corresponding to along the b…

A cast lead seal matrix, circular and flat with a suspension loop in the centre of the reverse. The central motif is an eight pointed star with a pellet in each section, within a grooved border. The inscription appears to read +S' R'ASEL FILL' . WILL NIChOL'- (Seal of Rasel? son or daughter of William Nichol). The first name has proved difficult to read or decipher, there being no obvious candidate ending in ...asel. There may be another letter between the R and the A, and it is possible that the R may in fact be a P. Apart from this, however, the matrix is easy to read and the nam…

A lead alloy document seal, roughly circular in plan with two ovoid projections at top and bottom that form suspension or attachment loops, only one of which survives intact. The seal has a plain reverse but the front bears a shield, three lions passant on the sinister. The shield sits on a circular field of cross-hatching, bound within a circular, double lined border containing saltires, which is itself bordered by a ring of pellets. The seal probably dates from the 14th century. The shield bears the Arms of England, and although the lions are on the sinister rather than guardant thi…
