An incomplete Iron Age La Tene IBa type brooch dating to the period c.400 - 275 BC. The majority of the brooch survives it missing only its head and integral sprung pin. The brooch is broken at the head with only a small part of the circular cross sectioned wire of the spring remaining running vertically down for c.2mm before arching steeply upwards from the head into the bow. Iron corrosion around this area suggests there may have been an iron cross bar. The bow expands into a D-shaped cross section with a flat back and convex front. Despite being mostly abraded smooth there are f…

A copper alloy pommel from a sword or dagger in the shape of a human bust dating to the later Iron Age (150-1 BC). The bust is moulded in three dimensions, with the lower edge of the shoulder line demarcated by an incised groove which runs around both sides of the object. The bust ends here, at approximately the point of the clavicle. Iron staining on the sides of the shoulder appear to be from the end of the sword rather than expansions at the sides. Directly below this is a sub-rectangular attachment, much marked by iron decay, where the pommel would once have attached to the sw…

A copper alloy pommel from a sword or dagger in the shape of a human bust dating to the later Iron Age (150-50 BC). The bust is moulded in three dimensions, beginning just below the shoulder line, with the point where the thick neck and shoulders meet emphasised with a cast thick line, possibly intended to represent the neckline of a garment. The neck tapers slightly but remains thick at the point where it meets the head. The chin is broad and bearded, with the point of the beard emphasised, giving the chin a somewhat bulbous appearance. The beard continues up to the ears on either…

An incomplete late Iron Age copper alloy Nauheim-derivative brooch of expanded bow form (Feugère 1985 type 11a). The bow and most of the catchplate survive. The bow retains about six centimetres of the spring at the head. The coils of the spring and the integral pin have been lost to an old break. The upper part of the bow consists of a circular dome, convex at the front and concave at the rear (17.6mm in diameter and 5mm deep). The dome is decorated with an incised downward pointing triangle with concave sides (tricorne), within a circle. The circle is almost as big as the dome …

A copper alloy artefact, probably a strap fitting such as a strap union, or perhaps a harness fitting or mount. It probably dates from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 800 BC - AD 100. The object is incomplete, but appears to have been symetrical. It consists of a pair of opposed triangular loops, both springing from a central block. The block is square in profile, but narrow when viwed from the front, rather like a square collar. It is decorated with incised border lines on the front, upper and lower faces. Projecting from the back of the central element is a circular sectioned…

A cast copper-alloy ring possibly of Iron Age date to early Roman date. The ring is broadly circular with a circular cross section. The ring has a dark-olive green patina with occasional pitting. The central hole is slightly off-centre or worn, so one side of the ring is thicker and wider (4.29mm, 4.16mm compared to 3.42mm, and 3.46mm). The ring is undecorated. It is 17.26mm in diameter, and weighs 3.94mm. While such a plain item is hard to date specifically. The patina suggests an Iron Age date, although a Roman date cannot be ruled out, Such rings might have been associated wit…

A Late Iron Age/early Roman (AD20-80) copper-alloy Colchester two-piece brooch, incompletein so far as it is missing the elements of its catch-plate, and much of its pin. The wings are short, flat and rectangular. Behind the wings is a hook that curves upwards to retain the axis bar, and, above this, an integral hook curved back on itself to retain the chord. The spring mechanism survives intact, around its axis bar, the chord retained within the rearward hook. There are two coils to each side; on one side the innermost coil develops into the pin which has been truncated after only c.…

Upper part of the bow and head of a Late Iron Age cast copper alloy birdlip type brooch. The lower part of the bow, pin, foot and catchplate are missing. From this oval top the bow rises at 90 degrees before bending over abruptly and running relatively straight to the foot. In…
