An incomplete Early Medieval copper alloy harness pendant, dating to c. 1000-1100. The object is formed of two pieces. The first piece is the hanger. This is trifoliate in shape, formed of three rounded terminals projecting out. Each rounded terminal has an iron circular rivet through the centre, with iron staining surrounding it. Below the top terminal there is moulded decoration in the shape of a raised V, around the other two terminals are V shaped grooves. In between the lower terminals the hanger attachment projects, this is formed of two rounded hoops, through which the iro…

A probably incomplete copper-alloy medieval buckle from harness, dating to c. AD 1350-1400. The bar is D shaped in cross section, with a raised central ridge. At one end of the bar is a square plate which projects out at each corner - the vestiges of an integral frame. The projections on the outer edge are triangular and pointed, with a raised curve edge in between. This curves round a central circular perforation. The projections on the inside edge are also triangular but curve in slightly. Beside both these two corners are smaller circular perforations. The bar extends down from bet…

An post-medieval furniture fitting: a cast and forged copper-alloy drop handle from a drawer pull. The object is unusual in having two perforations aligned longitudinally up the centre (one has broken through), and it may be that the object was reused. However, it is best recorded as a furniture fitting in the absence of firm knowledge of such reuse. The object is sub-trapezoidal in shape, ending by bifurcating with a rearward terminal scrolling to each side. The main field above the split terminal features a raised triangular moulding with engraved cross-hatching, plus the holes m…

A broken and incomplete late early-medieval to medieval copper-alloy double-ended strap link from a harness (c. 11th century). Both end loops have been broken through as a result of old damage and are now vestigial. They would have been oval, but it is impossible now to tell whether they were adorned or not. The object has an oval swelling at its centre, which seems to be no higher than the bars which connect it and the loops. The bars appear to have a cross-section which is rectangular with rounded corners. In profile the object is curved, presumably from use. The object now measu…

A copper-alloy buckle with integral plate of medieval date, c. 1200-1350. The buckle and plate have been cast in one piece, with the frame of the former being D shaped with a straight outer edge, and the plate itself being pointed and roughly sub-oval. Just beyond the junction between frame and plate, there is a small circular aperture which now is filled with ferrous corrosion products indicating the presence of an iron pin component. Identification of this component as a corroded pin is confirmed by further ferrous staining towards the centre of the outer edge, and also in one corne…
