A corroded, damaged and incomplete, copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch, dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period (c. 25 - c. 60 AD). It retains its rearward facing hook at the top of the head; along with half the length of the integral spring which has been coiled three times. The pin no longer survives along with the rest of the spring mechanism; part of the axis bar survives within the coils. The wings are minimal, sub-rectangular and flat; 11.1mm wide in total. The bow turns through about 100 degrees at the head, into the bow. It has been bent back the other way at a…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period (AD c. 25 - c. 60). It retains its rearward facing hook at the top of the head; it is bent back on itself to meet the front of the bow. The stub of the integral spring and pin survives at the back of the head, below the hook. The wings are minimal, sub-rectangular and flat; 14.2mm wide, one appears damaged at the tip. Patches of iron corrosion product within this area are probably from the (missing) axis bar. The bow bends through ninety degrees just above the he…

The do not cover the whole of the coiled spring mechanism, which has three coils surviving to each side, and the chord above; the pin is missing. The iron axis bar is corroded within the spring mechanism with a gap where the pin was. The chord is held in place by a pointed rearward hook. The bow curves in a smooth arc and narrows to a rounded point at the terminal. It is broadly circular in cro…

An Iron Age cast copper-alloy figurine in the form of a well moulded half lying, half sitting dog in which the legs of the dog are tucked under the sitting body. The head and the shape of the face is almost fox like with a pointed nose, and faceted upper surface. The eyes are formed of a drilled hole going though the head. The tall ears are rounded at their tips. The two visible legs are bent in on themselves emphasising the seated posture; the foreleg appears to have lost its tip. The tail has a circular cross-section and extends slightly beyond the hind leg. The lower surface is fla…

A cast copper-alloy ring of probable late Iron Age to Roman date. The ring is semi-circular in cross-section, with a flat internal surface. It is decorated externally with a raised median band. The ring is uneven; it thickens in sections (min 6.5mm, max 7.2mm) and expands in hoop width (min 3.8mm, max 5.7mm). Consequently this gives the impression that the hole is off centre. The apparently deliberate difference between the two sides may suggest this is a harness loop rather than a bead. The variable grey/green patina with slight pitting and the decoration perhaps support a late Iron …

A corroded fragment from a wrought copper-alloy Iron Age(/Roman) brooch: probably a La Tène III, Nauheim derivative brooch dating to the 1st century AD. Typically for this one-piece brooch type, the spring would have had four coils with the chord internal, but only half of this arrangement survives (W.: 8.4mm); the coil has broken before the coils from which the pin would have emerged. The plain bow is narrow and basic, broadly circular in cross-section, arched in profile (max. W.: 3.3mm). It has broken around halfway along its length. This artefact has corroded to a red-brown colour…

The foot and catch-plate of a cast copper-alloy Late Iron Age or early Roman bow brooch. The bow is square with rounded corners in cross-section at the break and flattens to a long, very thin foot which widens on the underside into the catch-plate. The catch-plate has a curved upper edge and a straight lower edge. The fold survives well with an internal groove within to accommodate the pin. Orange-brown corrosion product within the fold suggests that the pin may have been made of iron, although it may have come from another source. There is a circular hole through the plate about two …

A corroded and worn fragment of a late Iron Age/early Roman copper-alloy Langton Down brooch. The head and wings of the brooch are almost intact, with the lower surface of the wings enclosing the spring mechanism (the right side of the spring is missing the wing's cover). The wings are cylindrical, possibly slightly squashed. The spring has broken before the emergence of the pin. Both terminals of the wings are also broken and corroded, as alluded to above. The bow has broken after 18.2mm, but enough remains to show its reasonable sharp curve towards the spring/pin, through around nin…

An incomplete Late Iron Age or Early Roman copper-alloy brooch of La Tène III, Nauheim derivative type (c. AD 10- c. 60). The pin, most of the spring and also the catch-plate are missing. The bow and spring, which would have extended at one side to form the pin, is integral. Only half of one turn of the spring survives and this encloses a fragment of an iron axis bar. The bow is curved in side profile and rectangular in cross-section with a thickness of 1.9mm. At the front, the head of the bow widens for a short distance to its maximum width of 4.9mm. An incomplete and slightly corroded copper-alloy La Tène I Iron Age brooch (3rd-4th century BC). The brooch is broken at its head with the pin and half of the spring mechanism lost (H.: 18.3mm). However, in the extant pair of coils to one side is the remnant of the axis bar. From the head (Th.: 2.7mm) the bow curves through ninety degrees, expanding as it does so. Indeed, the profile of the bow is relatively angular compared with the more gradual arc of some. The bow reaches a maximum thickness of 6.15mm. It tapers into the foot which curves back on itself terminating in a circle…

A worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Iron Age brooch, probably of the La Tène I era. The brooch is oval in shape, convex and lunular in section. Towards one end a raised knob protrudes vertically with an element protruding horizontally. The artefact appears to be possibly broken beyond this knob; the other knob is missing, as are the pin and any means of attaching it. The brooch bears some similarities with Iron Age brooches illustrated in Hattatt (2001, 287; fig. 146).
