Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy stirrup strap mount dating to the Early Medieval period (c. AD 1000-1100). The object is sub-rectangular in plan with an integral rivet hole or suspension loop at the upper edge. The face of the mount is convex and appears to be zoomorphic in design with the motif of two eyes and a nose or beak. The face of the object is very worn thus obscuring the details. An iron rivet remains in situ in the centre of the lower edge. The reverse is concave and undecorated. The object has a patchy, light green patina.
The object can be classified as Williams Class B, Typ…

An Early Medieval copper-alloy strap end, dating to c.AD 900 - 1000. The strap end is of Thomas' Class E Aspatria type being tongue shaped. A flat copper alloy object tapering gradually from a straight rear edge to a rounded front edge. It has a plain rear face surfaced with white metal tinning, and a front surface decorated with an elaborate design formed by raised elements within a narrow plain border around the edge of the object. The design superficially resembles a styalised bird, with an elongated 'body' placed centrally from the front to back of the object, a lozenge shaped 'h…

An incomplete copper alloy stirrup strap mount. Williams Class A, Type 15. The original surface is badly worn by cleaning. At one end of the rectangular plate is a step or remains of a hinge at 90 degrees to the plate. Adjacent to this on the plate is a single rivet hole. At the other end, approximately one third of the plate is decorated with lines in a scroll formation, and the rounded appears to follow this decoration. However, due to the over-cleaning it is not possible to establish if this is a broken edge, or the complete item.

Copper alloy unidentified object. Rob Webley kindly comments as follows: 'This record is a little confusing insofar as the Object Type is Stirrup while spur is mentioned in the Description. As far as I know, though, we don't know what these fragments are, and similar have long been recorded under 'Unidentified Object'. Please see this forum thread for interest - http://forum.finds.org.uk/t/emailed-zoomorphic-and-odds-and-ends/19635'. An incomplete and in two parts, copper alloy champlevé enamelled circular brooch dating to the early medieval period (c.AD 800 - 1000), Weetch Type 21.
The brooch comprises a central circular panel with a wide recessed rim. The rim is approximately two thirds complete with a small portion now detached from object. The remaining portion of the rim has a beaded outer border with raised curvilinear designs. Two opposing rivets protrude from the rim suggesting the object may have been modified for alternative use, perhaps as a mount.
The central panel depicts a bird holding a …

A copper alloy stirrup strap mount of early medieval date. Anglo-Scandinavian, c.1000-1100. Williams Class A, type 15. A shouldered rectangular plate, decorated with a single inset line which seems to begin at the left shoulder and continues downwards to follow the rectangle outline shape and terminates at the apex in two scrolls or animal heads. The central zone of the plate is undecorated. The apex is possibly broken. It has a single upper rivet hole, and two lower fixing holes. One of the lower fixing holes may be a replacement. An incomplete copper-alloy early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian) double-ended harness link. The fragment is an irregular T-shape, flattened, but slightly curved in profile. The central section is sub-triangular in shape with a wide break across the narrower end and a short bar projecting from one corner of the wider end. A rounded, worn break suggests that another bar projected from the opposite corner originally. The surviving bar is D-shaped in cross-section with a rounded outer face and culminates in the inner edge of a loop, the rest of which is missing. The sides o…

Probably the lower edge of an Early Medieval copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, type 6, dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The fragment consists of the entire lower, straight edge and parts of the straight sides leading up at right angles before an irregular, worn break along the top which follows thinner, weaker points in the design. In the lower corners are circular attachment holes, one filled with iron corrosion. This corrosion continues across the back which is otherwise plain with no remaining flange.

A fragment of an Early Medieval stirrup strap mount, dating to c. AD 1000-1100.
The fragment consists of a broadly triangular stirrup strap mount which has been regularly pierced at intervals. Two circular piercings survive completely, while two are missing their outer perimeter due to its fragility, A further less regular pair of ovoid apertures are also largely missing and only to be hinted at from their upper areas, which survive. Along the central spine of the mount are two raised relatively square areas with a more circular depression between them. These are notably concave …

An incomplete and heavily worn and abraded copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount, dating from the 11th century, Williams Class B, Type 3, Group 9 (probably).

A copper alloy openwork incomplete scabbard chape, of Early Medieval date, about AD 900 - 1000. The object is an almost flat piece of openwork metal, with two fairly complete edges and the other sides broken. The angle of the two unbroken sides suggests that the object could have been pentagonal or lozenge shaped. The front is decorated; it is moulded with an anthropomorphic head motif (probably originally central but now near the broken right hand edge), surrounded by apparently interlaced ribbon work forming an arc over the top of the head and filling the space to the sides. A copper-alloy Early Medieval (Anglo Scandinavian) stirrup mount, dating to AD 1000-1100. It consists of an arched frame, which is rounded at the top and straight on the other sides. The base has a protruding narrowed right angle flange, which is pierced with a circular hole. The upper edge has a sub-rectangular extension, which has a circular hole; the latter loop is set at right angle to the plane of the mount.
