Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead seal matrix, which has been chip carved. The seal matrix is a flat, circular type, with the remains of a lug on the reverse. The matrix has been badly damaged by the plough and general wear in the soil. The finder reported that the matrix broke into two pieces as he carefully lifted it out of the ground. The lead is very friable and two small sections of the outer edge of the matrix are missing. The edges of the seal matrix have been damaged, so the legend is incomplete. It is impossible to see if the lug is pierced or unpierced. The lug has been positioned at roughly the …

A cast lead seal matrix, flat and circular, with an unpierced lug on the reverse. The edges of the seal matrix have been slightly damaged but most of the legend remains intact. The face depicts a basic flower with eight petals. Around the flower there is an inner circle. The legend appears to read (in Latin) * S' EMME REL-TE I[--'IS] (Seal of Emma, widow of...) The lug has been positioned at roughly the top of the matrix, but does not quite match up with the initial mark, which is a star; it is located at an 11 o' clock position (in relation to the lug). It helps to show the user…

A fragment of a Neolithic polished flint axe. Axes such as these were one of the core types of tools used in the Neolithic period from circa 3500 - 2000 BC. The axe has been knapped from a nodule of flint and then ground and polished over its entire surface. All that survives of this flint is the cutting edge and the lower end of the axes blade. The entire butt end has been removed by many breaks. The surviving fragment has a pointed oval section. The edges of the axe have not been chamfered. It was common practice for broken axes to be re-flaked as this one has been but rarely were t…

A crude pick, knapped from high-quality brown stained flint. The artefact is of the type known as a ‘Thames pick’ but it could be a tranchet axe. The artefact is fairly long and narrow with a rough diamond-shaped cross-section. One of the terminals has been knapped into a two facetted rounded blade, forming the tranchet style axe terminal, although this feature could be also be reminiscent of a Thames Pick. The other terminal is rounded, forming the butt end of the pick or axe. The piece is slightly curved in its length. The flake scars are large and crude, perhaps indicat…

A cast lead seal matrix, which has been chip carved. The seal matrix is a pointed oval type. The die of the matrix is flat and oval in shape. On the reverse of the die there is a small rounded, pierced lug position at the ‘top’ of the matrix (the lug relates to the position of the initial mark – indicating the beginning of the legend; showing the user of the matrix which way around to hold the seal matrix). The die of the seal matrix is corroded and has lost much of its original surface. The die depicts a eight pointed, disjointed star. The initial mark, which is a star, is l…

A cast copper alloy ‘arm’ from a pair of 16th century dividers. Only one arm from the pair of dividers survives. The arm is square is section tapering on all sides for approximately 27mm, before the section of the arm changes and becomes triangular. The arm then continues to taper to a point. The point has not been broken, so we know that each arm would have measured 77.4mm. The arm is decorated with two pairs of engraved lines, which run around three sides of the square-sectioned arm (close to the change in section and also near the hinge). The internal side of the arm is undecora…

A ceramic vessel of which only the base survives; the sides remain up to the widest point of the vessel. It has been wheel-thrown and has a lead glaze. The base is small and flat, rising up like a small pedestal, before opening out into the sides of the container. This vessel may be a bowl, or alternatively a jug; however, the small size of the base in relation to the width of the vessel suggests the former. This artefact dates to the late medieval - early post-medieval period.

A cast copper alloy object, which appears to be some sort of awl, or similar tool. The object consists of a narrow spike, 49.46mm in length (and 9.37mm in diameter at the widest point), with a circular cross-section. The point is 2.12mm thick. This spike has a narrower, square-sectioned tang (24.45mm long), which is straight, except for a slight bend in the end. The tang may have been set into a handle when the object was in use. An awl is the most likely use for this object, although the circular cross-section and the fact that it is made of copper alloy are both puzzling. It may alte…

A copper–alloy ring, slightly squashed out of shape. Method of manufacture is uncertain, as it has casting bubbles on one side, and yet another portion appears to have fine lines which may be lines from the original mould, which must then have been created using a circular drill of some sort, to produce an accurate circle. It is likely to post-medieval, although its purpose is unknown.

The bowl of a copper alloy spoon. The spoon was probably cast, and was then silvered with silver leaf. The bowl has a curve in its length, like a shallow ladle, in other words when viewed in section the spoon is crescent shaped. The remaining part of the stem has a flattened-hexagonal section. The bowl is 61mm long, by 48mm wide. This spoon is likely to be post-medieval. This spoon bowl may be the other part of the stem, number SUSS-8ECCB7, found on the same site.
