Obverse: hENRICVS REX III (NR ligated); Crowned bust facing with sceptre. Reverse: NIC/OLE/ONL/VND (ON ND ligated); Voided long cross with three pellets in each quadrant. Diameter: 17.55mm. Weight: 1.30g. DA=12:1. North, J.J. 1994. English Hammered Coinage, Volume I, Early Anglo Saxon to Henry III, c. 600-1272. Spink & Son, London.

A complete early medieval silver penny of Coenwulf of Mercia (796-821), Early group dating to c. 798 mint: East Anglian mint (Ipswich?), moneyer: Lul (North 362; Naismith 2011: E10.1). Ref: North 1994: 94; Naismith 2011: pl. 77, no. E10.1f (this coin). The reverse of the coin has been gilded with small patches surviving. The obverse remains without gilding and although there is no evidence for attachments to form a brooch fitting. The obverse shows greater wear than the reverse of the coin.
