Bent, (perhaps deliberately) copper alloy sixth century AD equal-arm brooch with a gently curving bow that has a median rib. The head-plate is semi-circular and is divided longitudinally into two cells. These cells are partially filled with garnets some parts of which have been lost, perhaps in antiquity. The rectangular foot-plate consisting of a single cell would probably have accommodated a garnet (now lost). The brooch is bent in such a way that the pin lug and catch-plate are in contact. At one side of the pin lug there is a deposit of iron corrosion. Traces of gilding survive on…

Fragment of the foot terminal of a cast copper alloy small square-headed brooch, length 18.5mm, width 11mm and 1.8mm thick. The break is old. There is a plain border around the bottom and the incurved sides of the fragment. Within the border are vertical grooves which appear to have extended upwards and outwards. The mask is in similar style to three brooches found at the Chessell Down, Isle of Wight, Anglo Saxon cemetery in the nineteenth century. These brooches are published in Arnold 1982.

The fragment is a terminal of sheet gold which has been roughly flattened out. The terminal is oval in plan and adjoins a short remaining stretch of a broad band. At this end there is an old break. Undulations in the metal suggest that the band met the terminal in a strong curve; the original form can be reconstructed as a C-section band with an everted oval terminal.
