An incomplete Iron Age to Roman cast copper-alloy rosette/thistle brooch (AD 25-60). This brooch has tubular open-ended wings which are not fully enclosed due to a horizontal slot at the rear. The ends of the wings are incomplete as they are broken and there is an off-centre vertical pin slot at the rear. The wings have a maximum diameter of 8.3mm. Within the wings are the remains of an iron spring and pin loop. On the wings, just above the top of the bow, are two sets of oblique decorative grooves. Each group is at either side of the centre of the wings. The bow is sub-rectangular …

An incomplete cast copper alloy Aesica brooch of Roman date, (AD 50 – AD 75). Length: 39.2mm; width: 19.9mm and 15.0mm thick. Weight: 16.47g. The brooch consists of partial wings, a bow and a leg and has an incomplete catch-plate. The surfaces are corroded and pitted overall. The head and the wings are incomplete due to old breaks and corrosion. The spring would have been protected at the front by the semi-circular wings and a rearward projecting hook behind the head would have held the chord. The closed bow is strongly arched in side profile (as viewed from the side). In plan, th…

An incomplete cast copper alloy and enamelled lozenge-shaped plate brooch of Roman date (c. AD 100 – c. AD 200). Length: 27.3mm; width: 20.4mm and 6.1mm thick. Weight: 2.61g. The pin is missing. Part of the plate, part of one of the pin lugs and part of the catch-plate are missing due to old breaks. The edges are up-turned to form a distinct narrow rim which appears to have been punched to form denticulated decoration. However, this is barely visible and unclear due to corrosion. The centre of the brooch is raised in one step and contains a lozenge-shaped field with enamelled m…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Roman Colchester derivative brooch (AD 50 – AD 80). Overall length 22.8mm, width 33.0 and maximum thickness 3.9mm. Weight 5.99g. The lower part of the bow and catch-plate are missing due to an old break. The spring mechanism (including the chord) and pin are also missing. The wings which are 33.0mm in width are semi-cylindrical (concave at the rear). The wings are abnormally long for a Colchester brooch and might suggest a link to some of the South-western brooches which have long wings. At the end of each wing, at the front, there is a sim…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of the Langton Down (variant) type (AD 43 - AD 100). Length 16.1mm, width 16.3mm and 7.7mm thick. Weight 2.97g. The wings, the spring and the pin are incomplete and the lower part of the bow is missing. All the breaks are old and abraded. The wings appear to have fully enclosed the spring mechanism. However, part of the wings at the rear is missing due to ragged breaks. Each end of the wing is also missing. Viewing the brooch from the rear, the left side of the spring is intact and consists of five coils, including the coil that evolves i…

An incomplete cast and wrought copper alloy Colchester derivative two-piece brooch of Early Roman date (c. AD 50 – c. AD 75). Overall length 57.0mm, maximum width 14.0mm. Weight 6.27g. The coiled spring, the pin, most of the axis bar and the catch-plate are missing. The brooch is long and slender. Small diminutive wings are fully intact and have an overall width of 14.0mm. These afforded some protection for the missing spring mechanism. At the head of the brooch there is a stub, representing the remains of a forward projecting hook that would have retained an external chord (now m…

An incomplete cast and wrought copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of Early Roman date (c. AD 50 - c. AD 75). Overall length 52.0mm, maximum width 23.0mm. Weight 7.46g. One half of the coiled spring, the pin and the catch-plate are missing. The brooch, an early example of this type, is particularly long and slender. The integral spring arises from the centre of the rear. Viewed from the front, it spirals to the left first. Only half of the spring of six (or possibly eight) coils has survived. These are to the left, as viewed from the front. This surviving part of the spring encl…

An incomplete cast copper alloy rectangular plate brooch of Roman, second century date (c. AD 100 - c. AD 200). Length 13.1mm, width 11.9mm and thickness of plate 1.1mm. Weight 1.19g. About half of the plate, including the catch-plate, the spring mechanism and pin are missing. There is an old transverse break across the plate. At the front, the brooch has an indistinct peripheral raised rim within which is the curving end of a decorative shape. This shape, when complete, was probably in the form of an 'S' and represents a sea-creature. The shape is defined by a narrow raised curvil…

An incomplete cast copper alloy rosette variant brooch of Roman date (AD 43 - AD 70). Length if straightened 37.0mm, width across wings 12.6mm, maximum diameter of bow 12.2mm. Weight 2.21g. Most of the axis bar, part of the curled over head (cylindrical tube), the pin and part of the catch-plate are missing. The head is curled over rearwards, forming a cylindrical tube to accommodate the axis bar. The axis bar appears to have been made of iron as the surviving part of the tube is filled with iron corrosion. At the centre of the head is a V-shaped groove which enabled the pin to rotat…

Incomplete cast copper alloy radiate-headed brooch of Early Early-Medieval date (AD 500 - AD 600). Length 22mm, width 18.5mm, thickness of plate 1.2mm. Weight 2.65g. The piece is the head-plate and part of the bow of a miniature form of radiate-headed brooch. When complete it would have had a triangular-shaped foot. The flat undecorated head-plate is semi-circular in plan and has a small projection with a rounded end at each lower corner. There is a double knop at the apex. The bow is flat on the rear face and the front face has a central longitudinal arris forming a sub-triangular sh…

The elegent, acutely arched bow has a median carination and is concave at the rear. Viewed from the front the sides of the bow taper inwards towards the top and the bottom. Fragment of the foot terminal of a cast copper alloy small square-headed brooch, length 18.5mm, width 11mm and 1.8mm thick. The break is old. There is a plain border around the bottom and the incurved sides of the fragment. Within the border are vertical grooves which appear to have extended upwards and outwards. Below these grooves a stylised human mask is represented by linear and curvilinear grooves. The mask is in similar style to three brooches found at the Chessell Down, Isle of Wight, Anglo Saxon cemetery in the nineteenth century. These brooches are published in Arnold 1982.

Bent, (perhaps deliberately) copper alloy sixth century AD equal-arm brooch with a gently curving bow that has a median rib. The head-plate is semi-circular and is divided longitudinally into two cells. These cells are partially filled with garnets some parts of which have been lost, perhaps in antiquity. The rectangular foot-plate consisting of a single cell would probably have accommodated a garnet (now lost). The brooch is bent in such a way that the pin lug and catch-plate are in contact. At one side of the pin lug there is a deposit of iron corrosion. Traces of gilding survive on…
