An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy shoe buckle frame (c. 1720-c. 1790). This openwork frame is moulded at the front and flat at the rear. The openings are sub-circular as well as elongated sub-rectangular. At the centre of the surviving outside edge there is a rosette motif which is flanked by grooves in low relief (It can be assumed that there would have been a similar motif on the missing outside edge). It was used to weigh against the 4 escudos, a Portuguese coin otherwise known as the Johannes or "Joe" in England. The value was equal to that of thirty six shillings, with a weight of 14.32g. (Withers and Withers 2011: 66). However, this coin weight weighs 12.97g. The weight is marked on both faces: "S / 36". Diameter: 23.3mm. Weight: 12.97g. A complete post-Medieval copper-alloy palm-guard (c. 1600-c. 1800). Read Type VI, variant. This palm-guard is circular, domed at the reverse and hollow on the front. The turned-up rim has two pairs of circular holes, diametrically opposed, close to the edge. The holes are at an angle of about 45° from the horizontal. The front has randomly distributed circular recesses of varying sizes. The plate has moulded decoration at the front resembling an escallop shell with scrolls above. A stub of the hook survives. The rear face is plain. One terminal of a pair of post-Medieval tongs (c. 1600-c. 1700 AD). These tongs were used by tobacco pipe smokers to pick up burning embers to ignite the tobacco. The terminal is in the form of flat stylised human hand. It has traces of a dark green patina and the break is old. 32.8 x 8.7 x 3.9mm. Weight: 2.04g. The weight is square and one side bears a crowned shield containing a sun with eight rays at the centre of the shield. The surface is reddish brown with powdery green copper-alloy corrosion products. 14.1 x 13.6 x 1.9mm. Weight: 2.73g. This is an English weight for a French ecu (or half ecu) au soleil, which was issued between 1475-1654 (see Withers 1995: 39 and 70).
