Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper alloy flat axehead of Early Bronze Age date c. 2150 BC – c. 1500 BC). Length 45.1mm, width 37.1mm and 7.8mm thick. Weight 42.17g. The butt and one of the blade tips are missing and the breaks are old. The blade of the axe was probably symmetrical in plan. The blade expands from the break at the top (the butt end) and originally the wing tips flared outwards abruptly and evenly. However on this example, one of the blade tips appears to have broken and then been re-modelled or re-sharpened in antiquity to form a gently curving edge rather than a flaring tip…

The tang is 45mm in length and is roughly square in cross-section. At the attachment end of the tang, where there appears to be an old break, it is 5.0mm x 5.2mm. The tang increases in size towards the flanged collar where its dimensions are 9.0mm x 9.2mm. The prominent flanged collar is sub-oval in plan (when viewed from above) and measures 20.5mm x 16.2mm. From beneath the collar, the blade, in plan, flares ev…

An incomplete barbed and tanged flint arrowhead of Early Bronze Age date (2150 BC - 1500 BC). Length 22mm, width 19mm and 5.1mm thick. The arrowhead is composed of mid-grey flint and is partially translucent. Both faces have been invasively retouched to form the shape. One side is mainly flat and the other side is slightly convex. One of the barbs is pointed and the other is squared off. The size and shape of the implement conforms to the Sutton b type, common in the Early Bronze Age (Green 1980, 117-143). The tang is relatively short and may be broken. However, this is difficult to t…

Fragment of a gold bracelet of Late Bronze Age date (c. 1150 BC - c. 750 BC). Length 20mm, width 22mm and c. 0.5mm thick. Weight 3.53g. The fragment is a terminal of sheet gold which has been roughly flattened out. The terminal is oval in plan and adjoins a short remaining stretch of a broad band. At this end there is an old break. Undulations in the metal suggest that the band met the terminal in a strong curve; the original form can be reconstructed as a C-section band with an everted oval terminal.
