A post-medieval (c.1590-1690) spherical iron cannon ball of uncertain post-medieval date. The object weighs 970g and measures 63.3mm in diameter. The surface is pitted (some deeper than others) and dark brown in colour, with patches of orange corrosion in many of the deeper pitted areas. There is no apparent damage to the surface. Blackmore, H.L. 1976 (pp. 293-8) suggests an English 'falcon' cannon for bore sizes of 2.5 inches (c.63mm) and 2lb in weight during the period c. 1590-1690. Reference: Blackmore, H. L. 1976. A worn and incomplete copper-alloy dress-hook of post-medieval date. The object is deeply hollow and has a convex front. It is of trapezoidal shape in plan. It tapers from a maximum width of 14.0mm to a width of 12.3mm at the hook end. Simultaneously, it narrows longitudinally from a height of 8.45mm to 6.7mm. Along each long side is a rebate. Between these rebates is a longitudinal zone of cross-hatched grooves, in low relief and defined by a pair of parallel transverse lines at the top and the bottom.
