An incomplete cast copper alloy mount, probably a a decorative shield clip dating from the late Iron Age to the transition into the early Roman period, c. 300 BC-c. 100 AD. The fragment consists of a hollow tubular sheet of copper alloy with the two long edges open slightly, perhaps to facilitate other components or hold the material it was fixed to. The tube is flat-ended and the wear in this area makes it uncertain if the edges are original or breaks from a longer object. The object is decorated with a series of raised collars in a 'reel and bead' design common to other objects, suc…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy object, probably a mount dating to the Roman period, c. 43-410 AD. The fragment has a thin-walled curved segment, which has broken on all edges; the curved segment is in turn fixed to a sub-rectangular bar with concave walls and a circular mount stud underneath. The remains of a large circular centrally-positioned rivet runs vertically through the entire fragment; presumably this would have fixed the mount to other additional items for horse harness or other related uses. It is uncertain what the function of this object would have been, but Nationa…

A copper-alloy Roman decorative mount in the form of a moulded knob. This mount is likely to have been fixed to a casket. The mount which is now misshapen has a maximum diameter of 32.18mm and length of 27.90mm. At the top of the mount is a small spherical knob with a diameter of 8.27mm and length of 6.52mm. The mount then expands to its maximum diameter as a flat reel with rounded edges that probably had a slight ridge around the top, unless this represents later damage to the artefact. This flat reel is approximately 8.47mm thick. After the flat reel curves back in towards the cent…

A copper alloy figurative mount dating to the first or second centuries AD. The object is in the form of a male bust (possibly an emperor) and would probably have been attached to a box or casket. The head is facing forward and has a serious expression. The hair is short and straight and the nose, eyes, mouth, ears and brow ridge are all sharply defined. Below the neck the shoulders and upper torso are represented, as well as the very top of the arms, which appear to be depicted as having been broken off. The bottom edge of the bust is finished in a convex curve, which suggests the fo…
