Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is plano-convex, with a trapezoidal cross-section. The top is flattened. It is basic and has suffered corrosion and a loss towards the base. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a central hole with a diameter of c. 6.8mm. The object is 8.8mm thick and weighs 14.5g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35 grams) for sp…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy object, possibly a Roman lamp hanger. The fragment has a straight bar on one side which is rectangular in section with slightly rounded corners. From the centre of one side of this bar projects a second curved bar with a square piece below it reinforcing the point where it meets the straight bar. This reinforcement is just above the complete terminal. The curved bar is also rectangular in cross-s…

A Roman brooch of Dolphin type. The bow is 74mm long and tapers to a point; the crossbar survives to 36mm wide. The spring, pin and parts of the catchplate and of the semi-cylindrical crossbar are missing. The usual hook at the top of the bow, which would have held the chord in place, has broken off and has been replaced by a hole drilled through the head of the bow, apparently in antiquity. The surfaces are abraded but survive well enough to show that the plain central rib was flanked by two narrower ones bearing fine milled or beaded decoration; similar decoration is probably present…

Part of a brooch, probably a derivative of the Trumpet type (cf Collingwood and Richmond 1969, Type S). The upper bow is an incomplete disc with a lug or fragment of an outer lip at the top; an inner lip defines a central roundel that would originally have been enamelled. Above the disc is an incomplete squareish element that covers the casing for a short spring. The surviving part of the lower bow is narrow and may once have had some decoration down the centre; the catchplate has broken away, and the foot is lost. There are possible traces of tinning or silvering.
