An incomplete early modern (c.1650-1850) copper alloy heraldic livery mount of uncertain form, but perhaps depicting a swan extending from a twisted-rope base. The base is solid and measures 64.6x9.7x3.8mm with grooved decoration dividing it into six parts, each with a curved edge and imitative of twisted rope. From the centre extends a curving neck/ arm/ body (perhaps a swan's neck). This is decorated with curved grooves (and moulded grooves where it sits on the twisted rope base) imitative of perhaps feathers or scales, and is convex to the front and concave to the reverse. It termi…

A complete Late Early-Medieval to Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) cruciform openwork mount in zoomorphic form (1000-1100). The mount is slightly convex at the front and slightly concave at the centre of the reverse. A central openwork lozenge is formed of four curled tendrils, hooked at the end, emanating from a central 3.2mm diameter openwork circle. From the end of the tendril at the central circle project four arms at 90 degrees to each other. Around the central circle are four smaller circles c.2.0mm in diameter (these being at the junction of the arm and curled tendril). At the …

An incomplete post-Medieval silver plated lead alloy probable mount in the form of an Earl's coronet (c. 1775-c. 1825). This object is moulded at the front and concave at the rear and is in the form of an earl's coronet. It has five rays each of which supports a pearl and there is a strawberry leaf between the rays. The band is embellished with jewels. There was probably a thistle at the apex. On the rear face there are two stubs which may be the remains of integral spikes or rivets. This coronet is plated with silver at the front and the lead alloy at the rear is corroded. At t…

A probably Late Medieval (to Early Post-Medieval, c.1400-1600) copper alloy mount in the shape of a Gothic letter 'B', and now in two pieces. It measures 35.18x28.42x2.90mm and weighs 5.70g. To the reverse are three integrally cast rivets, now squashed flat and of irregular shape. The front of the mount is smooth and flat while the reverse is hollowed in in the areas between those where the integral rivets are. The breaks are worn, suggesting old-ish damage, although both pieces were found in close proximity to each other. The mount may be from a tomb chest or similar, or possib…

An anthropomorphic mount cast in copper alloy of Late Iron Age to Roman date. The mount appears to take the form of a moulded human head, with a face below an elaborate headdress. The headdress fans out in lower relief than the face below. Its upper half is decorated with an incised arc with longitudinal grooving above. Below the arc is a pair of pellets set centrally. The face is set below a band of hair delineated with longitudinal grooves, echoing the headdress. A corroded cast copper-alloy lozengiform mount of medieval date (c. 13th century AD). The flat mount has slightly incurving sides. It is perforated for attachment towards each of the longer ends; neither of the rivets survive. It is flat on both surfaces, albeit recessed on the upper surface to take enamel. Cells are formed within and outwith a raised quatrefoil which largely fills the field, abutting the border at one of the short apexes, and adjoined to the areas around the rivet holes. Outside the quatrefoil the surviving enamel is a mid-blue colour. Within it is light blue wi…

A cast copper-alloy mount possibly from a Roman folding stool. This mount has a circular recessed base with a circular-section solid projection (Dia.: 8.65mm). There is a single hole, which is worn, in the wall of the recessed base; part of the wall is broken and missing. There is a crude median groove around the base. There are six rivets arranged equidistantly around the base's top surface. Within the recessed base there are two copper alloy bars which curve round to form staples. The ends of each of these bars fit into holes in the top surface of the recessed base and are visible f…

A fragment of gilded copper alloy, which could once have been part of a medieval mount (possibly 12th to 13th century). The mount has been made from a moulded plate of copper alloy, which has then been gilded on the obverse surface. The obverse depicts what could be a boar or similar beast, with large eyes, a nose, ears and tusks, all of which are represented by engraved swirling designs. The head of the creature projects from a flat background and has a hollow reverse. The surface was all gilded, but now only traces of gilding survive. The mount is largely rectangular, although the b…
