Cast copper alloy crotal bell with no decoration. There is a central raised rib which divides the upper and lower halves of the bell. On the upper half of the bell, there are two circular sound holes, each about 5 mm in diameter, on either side of the attachment platform for the suspension loop, which is mostly missing. On the lower half of the bell, there is a cruciform opening with 'dumbbell' ends, which each terminate in another circular hole, also 5 mm in diameter, just below the central rib. The metal ball clapper within the bell is missing. Bailey (1992) has a similar…

Cast copper alloy double-loop or spectacle oval buckle frame which has a flat base and a convex profile. The strap bar is narrowed and flush with the rest of the frame. The pin is missing. There is a moulded fleuret knop on the outer edge of each loop. The sides of the frame are concave and there is a protrusion at either end of the strap bar. The pin is missing. There is some encrusted iron corrosion product on the surface of the pin bar and also at one edge on the floral projection, where the pin would have originally rested. The buckle frame is 48 mm long and 26 mm wide and 3 mm in…

Cast copper alloy trapezoidal shoe or knee buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. The frame has concave sides in plan and a flat base and a convex profile with a bevelled internal edge. The pin bar is recessed from the rest of the frame and still holds the pin and stud or anchor chape (the terminal is missing so it cannot be determined which one). At the back of the chape is a heart-shaped cartouche with the maker's mark within: H?P. This compares well to an example with the same mark illustrated in Whitehead (1996, p.99, No.616). At either end of the frame is a moulded p…

Cast copper alloy single-looped D-shaped buckle frame with thickened and expanded outer edge which is hollowed and convex in profile. The upper face of the expanded frame has moulded concentric ridges, but the surface of the frame has gone as has any decoration with it. The pin bar is narrowed and worn in the centre where the pin would have once rotated around it. The pin is missing but was probably formed of a pointed piece of copper sheet folded around the pin bar, tapering towards the point of the pin. The buckle frame is 25 mm long and 17 mm wide and 1.5 mm in thickness. The bar…

An incomplete cast copper alloy one-piece buckle with integral box plate, waisted and sub-rectangular in plan with a mostly hollow rectangular section. At one end, the integral square box plate is almost complete, only missing its two rivets which have been torn away with the strap. The plate on the front of the box has a thin border (thickness: 3mm) around the terminal end and to the left and right. Within the square bordered area, there appear to be the letters 'd n' that are slightly raised from the surface in the angular gothic lettering style. There are small traces of gilt remai…

Cast copper alloy single-looped oval buckle frame with straight-sided and expanded outer edge and an integral plate. The outer edge is very worn but has rounded edges which may have originally been lobes and a central ridge, where the pin would have rested. The pin is missing but would have probably been a wire example that would have looped through the hole nearest the buckle frame. The plate has a single knop on either side where it meets the buckle frame and three holes, for rivets and pins. Cast gilt copper alloy horse harness pendant, lozenge-shaped in plan with bifid knops on the each side and opposing circular knops below the suspension loop and at the terminal. These circular knops have hatched interiors and the side knops have the spiral terminals of tendrils running from the head knop and following the curve of the edge of the pendant. Below these tendrils is a stem which terminates in an elaborate leaf in almost a shield-shape with six pairs of parallel incised lines to define the veins. An arm of a copper-alloy dagger guard (quillon) of Medieval date (c.1200-1400). The fragment includes the whole of one arm and half of the central rectangular aperture where the dagger blade would have fitted. The other arm has broken off. The arm is circular in section and tapers in width from the central block and then expands to form a terminal which is circular in shape when viewed from the end. It appears that the arm is formed of a core wrapped around by a covering of sheet metal, with an open seam line visible on one face. It is very similar to another example on the database …

Approximately half of a broken, unfinished sandstone mace head or perforated 'pebble hammer', of the Neolithic or Bronze Age, semi-circular in plan, sub-oval in profile and oval in section. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). There is only minimal reshaping by pecking and grinding. The stone is mottled pale grey and pale brown in colour, with a single small iron carbonate stain on the dorsal surface. Incomplete post-Medieval (c.1500-1650) cast copper alloy double loop buckle frame with a broken pin. This buckle frame is convex on the upper surface and flat on the rear. Each loop is 'D'-shaped and is similar in size but not symmetrical and internally bevelled at the front. The strap bar is triangular in cross section. The pin consists of flattened sheet copper alloy which is attached by being wrapped around the strap bar at it's base. The pin would have tapered to a point and probably extended to just beyond the end of loops although just over half of the pin is missing, havi…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead cylindrical powder charger cap, with a flat oval lid with one of the two integral loops remaining at one side. The cap has been pressed from both sides so that the edges meet and the base is more ovate than it would have been originally. The lid has also been pierced and the subsequent pressing has resulted in a suboval piercing . The comparatively thin sides would have flared outwards towards the oval or circular mouth of the powder flask. The powder cap would have been part of a powder-charger or powder-holder, a small flask holding enough powder for a complete charge for …

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman sprung T-shaped brooch which would have had two parts and is now missing its spring mechanism and pin. The pin would have been held in the catchplate at the back of the foot of the brooch, which are also missing. Between the two wings, at the head of the brooch, are the remains of the base of the loop or hook for the chord that extended from the spring.
