A lead alloy flat discoidal weight of 103.3 g (3.64 ounces) or approximately a quarter of a pound in the avoirdupois system. The upper surface is stamped with the sword mark of London, a crowned A, the royal cypher of Queen Anne (1702-1714) and a figure of a standing angel with scales which represents the Plumbers' Company, who had the right to check and stamp lead weights in the City of London from 1588 onwards.

Cast copper alloy trade weight, round in plan and rectangular in profile with a raised square section rim on the front face and a flat back. The weight in grams is 25.6 which equates to nearly one ounce avoirdupois. Within the rim is engraved a circle surrounding a stamped design of a triple towered castle. Between the inner circle and the rim is a stamped A (standing for avoirdupois), a sword (the sword of St. Paul), an ewer (the mark of the Founders Company from 1826) and a crowned W, indicating the weight was produced in the reign of William IV (1830-1837). Explanations of the mark…

Cast lead freestanding trade weight, conical in profile with two sides slightly pinched in to narrow it at the apex to 16 x 13 mm, with a crease across the top surface where the metal has been forced together. It has a sub-circular base with a flat rim and circular slightly concave depression within the rim. The weight is free-standing, with no trace of an attachment or perforation for suspension. The weight is 63.55 g which equates to two and a quarter ounces avoirdupois and almost exactly two Troy ounces. CORN-41F950 is the same shape and almost exactly the same weight at 63.82 g. …

A cast lead fishing-net weight, sub-circular in plan with a central perforation and sub-rectangular in section. The central hole is sub-oval in shape, 6 mm long and 4 mm wide and appears to have been made by casting the molten metal around a narrow object. The impression of a twisted cord is visible on one side where it exits the central hole at the top and re-enters it at the bottom. The surface of the weight is patinated overall and is pitted and marked by several crude impressions, suggesting that the weight was crushed to fasten it to a cord whilst still in a semi-molten state. Th…

Cast lead uniface trade weight, circular in plan and trapezoidal in section, with moulded decoration on the upper face comprising a flat-topped shield bearing two chevrons, one above the other, composed of two sets of oblique lines. The reverse is plain. The outer edge of the reverse is bevelled so that the diameter on the reverse of the object is greater than the front face. The weight weighs 3.48 g which equates to an eighth of an ounce avoirdupois. Heraldic shields are used on lead weights, often in the shape of a shield, but they are often much larger. Shield motifs are used on co…

A post medieval copper alloy half ounce stacking trade weight dating from 1625-1685. The trade weight comprises a disc with a dished upper surface with an upstanding rim around the circumference and a base which has been filed flat. In the centre of the upper face is a circular pit where the weight was held while it was being filed. There are three incuse stamps in the dished area (a) a crown with a C below for Charles I or Charles II at about 11 o'clock, (b) the sword of St Paul for the City of London at 12 o'clock and (c) a ewer at 6 o'clock for the Founders' Company of London, whic…

Lead fabric weight, circular in plan, cut from a flat sheet of metal, with two attachment holes, that are 3 mm in diameter, in the centre and scalloped decoration around the edge made by cutting v-shaped nicks at intervals around the circumference. Although these objects resemble buttons, these weights were and are used to weigh down the hems of curtains, and perhaps also skirts. Bailey (2004) illustrates a similar lead fabric weight with two attachment holes on page 83, fig.9.396, which is dated from the late 18th century but they continued to be used into the 20th century. Cast lead standing weight, trapezoidal in profile and octagonal in plan with four thicker sides bordered by four narrower sides. The weight weighs 48.2 g which equates to 1.7 ounces avoirdupois or 1.5 troy ounces. It may have been used as a gaming piece, perhaps representing a castle, but similar lead gaming pieces illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, 33, are less than half the weight of this piece. Biggs and Withers (2000) illustrate an octagonal pyramid weight on page 32, no.74, which weighs 210 g and an irregular pyramid weight with four straight sides on page 33, no.79, whic…

Cast lead standing weight, trapezoidal in profile, with an integral lead suspension loop at the tapered upper end with a hole that is 4 mm in diameter. The attachment loop is 2.3 mm thick apart from at the apex where it is 1.5mm thick which suggests wear from use when it was suspended. The base is roughly square in section and slightly concave allowing the weight to be free-standing. There is a circular cavity, 3 mm in diameter and 3 mm deep, in the base to lighten the weight or to have allowed another metal to be inserted in to the cavity to make the weight heavier. It is 35.9 mm in …

Cast copper alloy cup weight, round in plan and trapezoidal in profile, tapering from a diameter of 23 mm at the rim to a diameter of 18 mm at the base. The exterior and interior of the cup weight are incised with two fine parallel lines a little more than half way up the sides, that runs around the circumference and the interior diameter of the cup. The cup weighs 14.6 g which equates to just under half an ounce avoirdupois. The cup weight is a single example from a nested set of differing sizes and weights which were used to weigh gold and silver in the form of coin, small objects o…

A cast lead truncated steelyard weight that is circular in plan and conical in profile and slightly asymmetrical. There is a perforation from the base to the apex for the hooked rod that would then attach to the steelyard arm. The hole is off centre. The weight weighs 190 g which equates to about 6.7 avoirdupois ounces or almost half of an avoirdupois pound, as one avoirdupois pound was 15 ounces. One Roman pound or libra was 328.9 g so this weight would equate to more than a half of a Roman pound, but half an English troy pound equates to g, and the shape and weight sugge…
