Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Slate spindle whorl, circular in plan and flat in profile, 19 mm in diameter, with a circular perforation measuring about 5.5 mm in diameter, weighing 7.3 g. This is unusually small for a spindle whorl of this type, although an undecorated slate spindle whorl of larger diameter (26 mm) but less weight (6.5 g) was found in excavations at Trethurgy (Quinnell, 2004 p 144 no. S30) and dated to the Roman period, although Quinnell states that decorated spindle whorls are more typical of the later Iron Age and 1st century AD, the Round there having been established in the mid-2nd century AD.…

A beach pebble with percussion markings in the centre of both faces, perhaps used as a hammerstone. A wide sub-oval in plan, lenticular in profile and an elongated oval in section. The ventral surface shows signs of dense pecking in an approximately circular area around 35mm in diameter. The surface pecking in the centre of the dorsal face is similar in extent but far less dense. The surface of the stone is uniformly pale creamy-grey in colour with multiple striations of red-brown iron carbonate. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach pebble from the Crackington Formation dating fro…

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A whetstone, made from a flat greywacke sandstone beach pebble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). Sub-oval in plan, both ends having been carefully shaped to a blunted point. The side margins are parallel and both surfaces are flat. All surfaces were polished to produce a completely smooth, polished artefact which is comfortable to hold, with no sharp edges or corners. The two flat faces are very slightly concave, suggesting that the whetstone was not subjected to extensive use and may have been lost soon after i…

A broken whetstone, trapezoid in plan, an elongated rectangle in profile and a narrow oval in section. Made from a flat, elongated greywacke sandstone beach pebble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). Both surfaces and both side margins have been polished to a smooth finish. One side margin is flat, the opposite side margin is curved through repeated use for sharpening metal tools. Both faces are slightly concave. Both ends have been broken off: the proximal end by a single break perpendicular to the side margins. …

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A natural, unmodified beach cobble of uncertain date which has been used as a hammerstone. Sub-oval in plan, lenticular in profile and in section. The distal end is much wider than the proximal end and is pitted through use as a hammerstone. A row of larger pits on the ventral margin of this area appears to be the result of a fault in the stone, rather than a deliberate modification. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). The surface stone is pale grey, with patches of darker…

A natural, unmodified beach cobble of uncertain date which has been used as a hammerstone. Sub-oval in plan, with a pronounced bulge on the lower left margin when viewed from the dorsal face, plano-convex in profile and in section. An oval, domed patch at the distal end of the side bulge, 92mm long and 52mm wide, is pitted through use as a hammerstone. The pitting has resulted in some flaking of the surface indicating that it was used for striking large objects. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 …

A natural, unmodified beach cobble of uncertain date which has been used as a grinding stone or pestle. An elongated oval in plan and in profile, oval in section. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). An oval patch, 46 mm long and 24 mm wide, has been worn near the distal end of the left hand side, when viewing the ventral surface. The surface of this patch is worn through percussion and smoothed by rubbing, apparently when held at an angle in one hand. The ventral surfac…

A grinding stone or pestle of uncertain date, sub-circular in plan, a narrow oval in profile and section. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). There is a shallow, linear scar in the centre of the dorsal face, at an angle of 45 degrees from the medial line and 30mm in length may be contemporary with its use or later plough damage. A shorter, deeper scar near the distal end may also be the result of plough damage. The distal end of the cobble has been broken off to form a …

Approximately half of a broken, unfinished sandstone mace head or perforated 'pebble hammer', of the Neolithic or Bronze Age, semi-circular in plan, sub-oval in profile and oval in section. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). There is only minimal reshaping by pecking and grinding. The surface stone is pale grey grading gradually to greyish-yellow grey in colour, with surface striations of red-brown iron carbonate staining. The left hand edge of the ventral face shows sign…

An unfinished sandstone mace head or perforated 'pebble hammer', of the Neolithic or Bronze Age, ovate in plan and profile and oval in section, slightly tapered at one end. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). The stone is pale grey in colour, with large areas of darker grey-brown where it has been worn or ground. At the tapered end are several small inclusions of iron carbonate creating red flashes. The shaft hole is incomplete, having been commenced on both of the dors…
