A small copper alloy farthing trade token, very worn. The obverse has a shield with a coat of arms, possibly the tree and three wells denoting the City of Wells in Somerset. The token was found in the same area in Dorset as CORN-435F92, another trade token from Wells. The reverse bears what looks like the letters C W in the centre of the field, possibly under a crown but the edge of the token and its legends are missing. A similar item on the database is dated 1657 (SOM-5477BO) with the same initials and the same token with the crowned letters C W is listed after it in Williamson (196…

A Post-medieval copper-alloy 17th-century farthing trade token issued by the City of Wells in Somerset. The token is very worn but it is possible to see on the obverse a shield with a tree and three rectangular shapes representing the three wells on the city's coat of arms. The reverse is very worn but should show an elaborate crown above the letters C [W] for City of Wells. A very similar item on the database is dated 1657 (SOM-5477BO) with the same initials and the same token with the crowned letters C W is listed after it in Williamson (1967), p.993, nos.300-301.

The obverse bears a crowned head facing with a bifoliate crown and a mullet to the left of the crown. The inscription is [hENRIC DI] GRA [REX ANG]. The reverse has a long cross with three pellets in each quadrant and a quatrefoil in the centre. The inscription would have read CIVI/TAS/EBO/RACI, but only the last four letters remain.

Silver long cross penny of Edward I (1272-1307), Class 4a (1282-1283), London mint. The crown is trifoliate, which places it in Classes 1-9. The obverse inscription is +EDW R'ANGL'DNS hYB, which eliminates Class 1a-c, as the contracted form EDW R began with Class 1d. The face is wide with long hair and the drapery at the neck is composed of two shallow wedges. The ornaments between the fleurs are spearheads, and there is a short beaded line above the forehead below the band of the crown. The S in CIVITAS is egg-waisted and there are large, comma-shaped contraction marks which suggests…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy finger ring, probably Roman in date, consisting of a flat strip of metal bent into a penannular ring with both terminals narrowing to a point and overlapping slightly. The pointed ends suggest this could have been used as an earring, but they may also simply be narrowed to fit together when worn on the finger and penannular to allow for expansion. The ring may also been made from a broken fragment of a bracelet which are often penannular in the Roman period. The outer face of the hoop is decorated with three horizontal concentric grooves which converge towards the ends …

Small copper alloy buckle plate with a gilded front face, made of a piece of sheet metal folded over to fasten onto the bar of a buckle, with a semi-circular recess cut out to hold the pin. There are two copper alloy rivets set longtitudinally to fasten the buckle plate on to a leather strap, a fragment of which is still caught between the front and back plate. The plate itself is tapered from the buckle end and rounded at the opposite end. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar buckle plate with a tapered end on p.27, no.133, which is dated from c.1300-1500 Egan & Pritchard (20…

Cast copper alloy mount, hexagonal and flat, with a large off-centre rivet hole 3.7 mm in diameter. The hexagon is not regular; two parallel and opposite sides are longer than the others, making it 19.64mm long but only 12.41mm wide. At the shorter ends, one angled corner is longer then the other, making the angle more acute; the rivet hole is placed where the centre would be if the hexagon was regular and both angles less acute. The central hole is surrounded by incised oblique lines which slant outwards from the hole. They are relatively regular around the less acutely angled hal…

Incomplete cast copper alloy buckle with forked spacer. Oval, lipped and notched frame. Copper alloy wire pin. The forked spacer consists of two 'prongs' which extend from the back of the frame and are roughly filed to provide a key when soldered to the composite double sheet copper alloy plates which are now missing. Most of the tinning still survives on the surface of the buckle frame. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 36, no.214, which is dated from c.1350-1450.

The bar is worn where it touches the inside edge of the plate in the area cut away from the plate to allow the pin to loop around the spindle.
