Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete cast lead weight of Roman to Medieval date (AD 43-1500). The weight is cuboid in shape and contains no discernable decoration.
Due to the long period during which such weights were used and the lack of differential diagnostic features during that period a broad date has to be applied to this object.
The metal is a creamy white in colour.

A copper alloy mount from a medieval laver. The mount is in the form of a dog's head and neck. The head resembles 14th/15th century spouts which sometimes show a dog's head at the front. Although quite corroded, one can still see the snout, eyes and ears of the dog. On the back it has a deep circular hollow which was for the attachment of a handle, and the break at the neck is where the head would have been soldered to the side of the vessel.
Finds of mounts are not uncommon since the mount represents the laver's greatest point of weakness and thus is most vulnerable to being broke…

Three fragments of locally produced grey-ware. All are jar fragments of mid 2nd to early 3rd century date (150-225 AD). The body sherd is polished and sooted towards the base.

The rim to base profile of a plain-rimed bowl with a flange (for holding) towards the rim. The vessel is finely made in a quartz-tempered fabric that has been fired in an oxidising atmosphere to produce an almost orange, oxidised fabric. The flange and rim are burnished on the exterior, and the interior is is also slightly burnished. This tapers out towards the base suggesting that an implement had been used on the interior to cause the wear, possibly a spoon or mortar. The flange would have been held to stabilize the bowl whilst the mixing or stirring took place. It was probably …

Lead plug with attached pottery fragment. Probably a mend for a pottery vessel. Although the pottery fragment is too small to be dated these items are usually Roman in date. Consists of a sub-oval, slightly convex (ie dome shaped) lead front plate, containing a small hole (damage) and irregular edges and surface. This measures 35.2mm long, by 27.1mm wide. On the reverse a lead stem extends from the mid point of the front plate and terminates in a smaller, irregularly-shaped, second plate (parallel to the first). A small piece of orange courseware pottery is sandwiched in between these …

Lead pot mend. Undatable, although it is likely to be Roman. It consists of an irregular, oblong oval flat lead front plate, measuring 35.6mm long, by 29mm wide. There are some indentations on the upper surface, although these are probably the result of post-depositional damage. On the reverse a lead stem extends from roughly the mid point of the front plate and terminates in a second, smaller, irregularly-shaped plate. Unlike example BH 3B39FO (with which it was found) there is no pottery sandwiched between the two plates. The total thickness of the piece is 12.4mm. The weight was not…

On the opposite side to this arc there are two evenly-spaced semicircular indentations. These also have numerous file marks. In between these indentations there is an oblique ragged break. In side view it tapers from the break towards the arc. At the break the width is 9.6mm and the w…

Four rim sherds and one body sherd from a probably medieval (AD c.1066-c.1200) or possibly Iron Age to Medieval (c.800 BC-AD c.1200) ceramic vessel. The sherds appear to have come from a large wheel made vessel with a rim of at least 560mm in diameter. The fabric is hard and very coarse. It is brown in colour with a thick dark grey unoxidised core. It contains many large white shell inclusions. This type of pottery is called shelly ware because of these inclusions. The outer surface of the vessel is covered in black soot showing that it was used for cooking.

A copper-alloy zoomorphic object with an iron core. The object consists of a curved shaft made of copper alloy, and a zoomorphic head at one end. The head has an outward facing “face” with a pointed chin, two horizontal grooves across the middle, slanted rectangular eyes which are holes and pointed ears (of which one is broken). Back to back with this face is another which is much more functional. It has a similar shield shape and has two rectangular holes at the top which could be interpreted as eyes, and a vertical rectangular hole which could be a mouth or nose. The two faces ar…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete but worn struck / hammered copper alloy trade token, issued by Samuel Lvdinton (of the Mercer's Arms), during the mid 17th Century (1660-1683).
Both Townsend (1983, p.40) and Williamson (1889, p461, #155) has identified this token as belong to that of Samuel Ludinton, who was mayor of the City of Lincoln in 1647 and 1660. There was another Samuel Ludinton, probably the son of the former, who held the office of Sheriff in 1681 and Mayor in 1683 (Williamson, 1889, p461). This trade token could therefore date from between 1647 to 1683.
