County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but worn struck / hammered copper alloy trade token, issued by Samuel Lvdinton (of the Mercer's Arms), during the mid 17th Century (1660-1683). Both Townsend (1983, p.40) and Williamson (1889, p461, #155) has identified this token as belong to that of Samuel Ludinton, who was mayor of the City of Lincoln in 1647 and 1660. There was another Samuel Ludinton, probably the son of the former, who held the office of Sheriff in 1681 and Mayor in 1683 (Williamson, 1889, p461). This trade token could therefore date from between 1647 to 1683. Obverse: The Mercer's Arms Obverse l…

Cast copper-alloy fragments from a Roman life-sized statue of a horse. The fragments were discovered in plough soil within an area measuring approximately 2m square. (UPDATE: An additional fragment was found in 2013, recorded on the PAS database as LIN-666619). There are eight fragments in total, three of which join together to form a larger fragment. This find is discussed in Worrell and Pearce 2011: 410-411, and more comprehensively by Dr Kosmas Dafas, who refined the identification of these Roman statue fragments as coming from a horse (K. Dafas: forthcoming). The descriptions t…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire

Early medieval lead strap-end. The strap end is rendered in the Winchester style. Although this decoration is fairly crude in execution and eccentric in detail, it depicts a fairly standard inhabited plant-scroll design featuring a pair of confronted lizard-like creatures with rounded heads (and possibly tails) at the top, each perched on the branches of a central plant which sprouts from an unusual calyx or bulb at the bottom. Whilst fairly low-level in craftsmanship, the fact the decoration has been finished and the rivet holes pierced shows that such lead examples were clearly inte…

An incomplete silver 'knotenfibula' dating to the late Iron Age. The pin and spring of the brooch are missing and the catch plate is also broken and missing. The bow has a diamond shaped cross section. At its highest point, close to the end of the brooch where the spring was originally, there is a circular boss between two ring mouldings. This boss is the defining feature for these types of brooches. The original catch plate, which held the pin in place when worn was decorated with two large perforations to produce a delicate decorative shape. The piece of brooch recovered is 87.9 mm

The rim to base profile of a plain-rimed bowl with a flange (for holding) towards the rim. The vessel is finely made in a quartz-tempered fabric that has been fired in an oxidising atmosphere to produce an almost orange, oxidised fabric. The flange and rim are burnished on the exterior, and the interior is is also slightly burnished. This tapers out towards the base suggesting that an implement had been used on the interior to cause the wear, possibly a spoon or mortar. The flange would have been held to stabilize the bowl whilst the mixing or stirring took place. It was probably …

The rim and neck of a wide-mouth jar with bifurcated rim. This type of jar is a common form in Nene Valley grey ware, but the fabric of this sherd is that of a locally produced grey ware. 2 rims and 2 body sherds of Dales ware jars. There is sooting at the interior of rim of one vessel. They have distinctive rims and were made with a shell-tempered fabric in North Lincolnshire. In the Roman City of Lincoln they are found from the mid-3rd century to the 4th (250-400). However, near the source of manufacture (as Saltfleetby) they could arrive earlier from perhaps 200 AD. They are generally handmade towards the base but finished on a slow wheel at the rim, and were used as cooking pots.

A worn and sooted rim fragment from a curved rimmed jar in vesicular fabric. The vesicular appearance is a result of inclusions, possibly shell, that leached out during firing.
