Within a central rectangular recess is enamel that has decayed to a dull red colour. On the bevelled sides are minute stamped letters which have been checked by a number of volunteers. They appear to read: CDTMA // VXTE, although only the 'M' on one side and the 'TE' on the other can be seen with clarity. Cast copper-alloy fragments from a Roman life-sized statue of a horse. The fragments were discovered in plough soil within an area measuring approximately 2m square. (UPDATE: An additional fragment was found in 2013, recorded on the PAS database as LIN-666619). There are eight fragments in total, three of which join together to form a larger fragment. This find is discussed in Worrell and Pearce 2011: 410-411, and more comprehensively by Dr Kosmas Dafas, who refined the identification of these Roman statue fragments as coming from a horse (K. Dafas: forthcoming). The descriptions t…

The rim to base profile of a plain-rimed bowl with a flange (for holding) towards the rim. The vessel is finely made in a quartz-tempered fabric that has been fired in an oxidising atmosphere to produce an almost orange, oxidised fabric. The flange and rim are burnished on the exterior, and the interior is is also slightly burnished. This tapers out towards the base suggesting that an implement had been used on the interior to cause the wear, possibly a spoon or mortar. The flange would have been held to stabilize the bowl whilst the mixing or stirring took place. It was probably …

2 rims and 2 body sherds of Dales ware jars. There is sooting at the interior of rim of one vessel. They have distinctive rims and were made with a shell-tempered fabric in North Lincolnshire. In the Roman City of Lincoln they are found from the mid-3rd century to the 4th (250-400). However, near the source of manufacture (as Saltfleetby) they could arrive earlier from perhaps 200 AD. They are generally handmade towards the base but finished on a slow wheel at the rim, and were used as cooking pots.
