A sherd of Medieval vessel, dating to AD 1200 - 1400. Undiagnostic body fragment, possibly a sherd of Potterhanworth Ware. The outer fabric is brown with a slightly red tint and soapy surface, it is decorated with a wave-like pattern towards the lower end of the sherd. It has an oxidised dark grey core. The interior surface is very worn. There are abundant of large and small hard white calcite inclusions (shell) and some small pitted voids. The exterior surface is compact. It is greyish-brown in colour with no distinct core. It contains many small quartzite inclusions. An incomplete Late Iron Age to Early Roman cast copper-alloy vessel foot possibly from a bucket (c. AD 25-c. AD 150). The object is roughly semi-circular in plan and the outer arc has a diameter of about 40.0mm. At the side of this arc it is bevelled from tip to tip. Both bevels have numerous file marks. On the opposite side to this arc there are two evenly-spaced semicircular indentations. These also have numerous file marks. In between these indentations there is an oblique ragged break. A copper alloy mount from a medieval laver. The mount is in the form of a dog's head and neck. The head resembles 14th/15th century spouts which sometimes show a dog's head at the front. Although quite corroded, one can still see the snout, eyes and ears of the dog. On the back it has a deep circular hollow which was for the attachment of a handle, and the break at the neck is where the head would have been soldered to the side of the vessel. Lead pot mend. Undatable, although it is likely to be Roman. It consists of an irregular, oblong oval flat lead front plate, measuring 35.6mm long, by 29mm wide. There are some indentations on the upper surface, although these are probably the result of post-depositional damage. On the reverse a lead stem extends from roughly the mid point of the front plate and terminates in a second, smaller, irregularly-shaped plate. Lead plug with attached pottery fragment. Probably a mend for a pottery vessel. Although the pottery fragment is too small to be dated these items are usually Roman in date. Consists of a sub-oval, slightly convex (ie dome shaped) lead front plate, containing a small hole (damage) and irregular edges and surface. This measures 35.2mm long, by 27.1mm wide. The rim to base profile of a plain-rimed bowl with a flange (for holding) towards the rim. The vessel is finely made in a quartz-tempered fabric that has been fired in an oxidising atmosphere to produce an almost orange, oxidised fabric. The flange and rim are burnished on the exterior, and the interior is is also slightly burnished. This tapers out towards the base suggesting that an implement had been used on the interior to cause the wear, possibly a spoon or mortar. Three fragments of locally produced grey-ware. All are jar fragments of mid 2nd to early 3rd century date (150-225 AD). There are two bases, one with a moulded footring and one with a groove under the neatly turned and burnished base, which has wear marks on the interior. The body sherd is polished and sooted towards the base.
