Early Medieval (11th century) cast copper alloy strap distributor, comprised of a central triangular panel with concave edges, with each angle extending out into a devolved animal head terminal. There is a circular ring attached under the animal heads, forming three openwork sub-oval areas which would have been used to secure a hook or strap fitting. A more elaborate fitting of this type has been recorded on this database as LIN-F29FC4.

Cast copper alloy Viking strap junction. The strap union is circular with three circular perforations evenly spaced leaving three arms radiating from the centre to the outer edge. It is slightly domed and the arms are hollow backed. Part of the outer edge has broken away at the edge of one of the perforations. The arms are raised above the edge of the piece and have rounded, slilghtly bulbous terminals. They have incised decoration which is the same on each arm. In the centre of the three arms is a triangle. At the terminals the decoration appears to be in the form of a hu…

Early medieval lead strap-end. The strap end is rendered in the Winchester style. Although this decoration is fairly crude in execution and eccentric in detail, it depicts a fairly standard inhabited plant-scroll design featuring a pair of confronted lizard-like creatures with rounded heads (and possibly tails) at the top, each perched on the branches of a central plant which sprouts from an unusual calyx or bulb at the bottom. Whilst fairly low-level in craftsmanship, the fact the decoration has been finished and the rivet holes pierced shows that such lead examples were clearly inte…

Copper alloy cast strap end from the late Anglo-Saxon period. It is almost triangular in plan and is not complete being broken at the top (widest) end. It is zoomorphic in design, probably a mouse, and dates to around the 9th century AD. The design is zoomorphic and a snout, eyes and ears can be seen. The snout is narrow at the bottom and widens up to the ears where it stops. The eyes are raised hollow circles, the ears are similar but sub-circular and larger. The ears may have been filled with something, possibly enamel for decoration.

Copper alloy military 'amphora' type strap-end or, more correctly, belt terminal of the late Roman period. Although not common in Britain (from stratified contexts), examples are known such as one from the Winchester Lankhills cemetery, for instance. They belong to the type of belt with 'propeller' stiffeners similar to a complete set from Zengovarkarhony. They seem to have been worn with the tongue of the buckle facing the wearer's right hip, which meant the strap terminal ended up dangling on the left hip, after being wrapped around the belt a few times. Although most amphora type b…

Cast copper-alloy fragments from a Roman life-sized statue of a horse. The fragments were discovered in plough soil within an area measuring approximately 2m square. (UPDATE: An additional fragment was found in 2013, recorded on the PAS database as LIN-666619). There are eight fragments in total, three of which join together to form a larger fragment. This find is discussed in Worrell and Pearce 2011: 410-411, and more comprehensively by Dr Kosmas Dafas, who refined the identification of these Roman statue fragments as coming from a horse (K. Dafas: forthcoming). The descriptions t…

The rim and shoulder of a curved-rimmed cooking pot. There is sooting under the rim and on the exterior, and a groove at the shoulder. The fabric is shell-tempered and similar to the fabric of Dales ware jars suggesting a north, rather than south-Lincolnshire or Northampton area of manufacture. It dates from the mid-2nd to the 3rd century. Vessels found with sooting should be handled carefully, since the sooting could indicate the type of wood used for cooking.

Copper alloy mount. Cast openwork mount, probably with a zoomorphic design. The flat backed plate bears four integrally cast fixing pins on its back: each pin rose from a rectangular base of about 5mm square with a tapered shank of rectangular section up to 11mm long - one complete pin remains, albeit bent back. The pins are set either side of the back of the central motif, where the mount achieves its greatest height or width. The stout integral pins may suggest this object was attached to thick leather. The design presents an uncertain subject: the centrepiece might be seen as …

The terminal is heavily abraded being broadly square in plan and sub-rectangular (D shaped) in cross section.
