The vessel is finely made in a quartz-tempered fabric that has been fired in an oxidising atmosphere to produce an almost orange, oxidised fabric. The flange and rim are burnished on the exterior, and the interior is is also slightly burnished. This tapers out towards the base suggesting that an implement had been used on the interior to cause the wear, possibly a spoon or mortar. The flange would have been held to stabilize the bowl whilst the mixing or stirring took place. It was probably used at the table rather than for cooking, but it is not strictly a fine ware. The form is identical to the samian form Dragendorff 38 and is of mid to late 3rd century in date, but could extend into the fourth. The fabric is similar tothe locally produced grey wares.
