An early medieval Series D type 2c('continental runic') silver sceatta. This type developed out of early series C designs, from the late primary or intermediate phases, perhaps the latter, given that the silver appears rather debased. It was probably struck in the lower Rhine region. On this example, as on many Series D coins, the 'APA' inscription (to the right of the obverse bust, and probably referring to the coin's moneyer) is innaccurately rendered.
Obv: Right-facing bust, with poorly rendered runic inscription 'APA'.
Rev: Cross with pellet in each angle.
