A Medieval gold annular and inscribed brooch dating from AD 1250 - 1350. The frame is circular and is decorated at the top with a pair of clasped hands. These are moulded, but they curve in the same orientation as the frame of the brooch. At the right hand and bottom cardinal points are flower motifs; one four petalled flower at each point. The petals are concave. The left hand cardinal point is occupied by the constriction for the pin. The flat upper face of the frame is inscribed: "+ IO - SVI - DE . D - RVE" (Translated by John Cherry as Ie Sui De Drue, meaning 'I am [a brooch/gi…

A medieval silver coin: a half penny of Edward III (1327-77), probably Florin coinage (1344 - 1351), Withers' type 13, London mint. It is 14.3mm in diameter and 0.9mm thick. It weighs 0.56gm. A small section is missing from the flan between 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock on the obverse. The coin has a lombardic N with a forked right hand stroke, and angular Os. Reference: North, volume 2, number 1132 and Withers' page 31, type 13 or 13a. This coin was originally identified as a Pre-Treaty Series E half penny, but the Crown, letter X and reverse letter Os do not seem to match the ex…

A post medieval Venetian coin; a soldino of Agostino Barbarigo (1486-1501) made of an unusual alloy of gold and silver which appears golden coloured instead of the usual silver. This design was used by Barbarigo before he changed over to the new (and much more common) soldino design. However, the style overall is bad, especially the lettering and the mint mark of N over M to the right of the doge is not listed in the detailed catalogue (Barrie Cook pers comm.) This, and the unusual metal suggests that it is some form of contemporary copy or an unknown variety. The coin is discoloured …

A copper-alloy zoomorphic object with an iron core. The object consists of a curved shaft made of copper alloy, and a zoomorphic head at one end. The head has an outward facing “face” with a pointed chin, two horizontal grooves across the middle, slanted rectangular eyes which are holes and pointed ears (of which one is broken). Back to back with this face is another which is much more functional. It has a similar shield shape and has two rectangular holes at the top which could be interpreted as eyes, and a vertical rectangular hole which could be a mouth or nose. The two faces ar…
