A probable corroded lid from a cast copper-alloy Roman seal box. The fragment comprises of the sub-oval lid and the vestigial remnants of the protrusions; one presumably the truncated hinge loop. One lug is bent down far more than the other and is narrower. The lid is flat and sub-oval, with abrasions to the edges. Within a border is a recessed field bearing eight pellets in low relief, arranged seven around one in the centre. This pattern can be found on a seal box lid recorded on this database - WMID4686. The recess contains traces of enamel in blue, with some cracking. The lower sur…

An early medieval Series D type 2c('continental runic') silver sceatta. This type developed out of early series C designs, from the late primary or intermediate phases, perhaps the latter, given that the silver appears rather debased. It was probably struck in the lower Rhine region. On this example, as on many Series D coins, the 'APA' inscription (to the right of the obverse bust, and probably referring to the coin's moneyer) is innaccurately rendered. Obv: Right-facing bust, with poorly rendered runic inscription 'APA'. Rev: Cross with pellet in each angle.

An incomplete cast copper alloy and glass finger ring of probable 3rd century AD date. The fragment comprises a collet and about one third of the wide flat hoop. In its current state it measures 21.5mm in length, 9.8mm in width, 1.4mm in thickness and it weighs 2.1g. The circular raised integrally cast collet has a diameter of 7.3mm. It contains a light blue glass setting. On either side of the collet there is an incised transverse line. Outside of these lines the hoop starts to narrow gradually, but most of the rest of the ring is missing. A parallel has been found during excavations …

A copper alloy buckle plate dating to the thirteenth century. In plan the buckle plate is in the shape of a bird or the letter 'M'. The wings and back of the bird have marginal rouletted decoration following the shape of the plate . Three pairs of horizontal rouletted decoration transverse the rectangular panel situated above the tail. Three triangular notches mark the slightly flared tail. Lead plug with attached pottery fragment. Probably a mend for a pottery vessel. Although the pottery fragment is too small to be dated these items are usually Roman in date. Consists of a sub-oval, slightly convex (ie dome shaped) lead front plate, containing a small hole (damage) and irregular edges and surface. This measures 35.2mm long, by 27.1mm wide. On the reverse a lead stem extends from the mid point of the front plate and terminates in a smaller, irregularly-shaped, second plate (parallel to the first). A small piece of orange courseware pottery is sandwiched in between these …

Lead pot mend. Undatable, although it is likely to be Roman. It consists of an irregular, oblong oval flat lead front plate, measuring 35.6mm long, by 29mm wide. There are some indentations on the upper surface, although these are probably the result of post-depositional damage. On the reverse a lead stem extends from roughly the mid point of the front plate and terminates in a second, smaller, irregularly-shaped plate. Unlike example BH 3B39FO (with which it was found) there is no pottery sandwiched between the two plates. The total thickness of the piece is 12.4mm. The weight was not…

At each end of the bezel is a stub, all that remains of the hoop. Each stub tapers in width from the bezel towards an old abraded break. On top of the bezel just over half is covered in bright blue translucent glass which has an undulating surface. The rim to base profile of a plain-rimed bowl with a flange (for holding) towards the rim. The vessel is finely made in a quartz-tempered fabric that has been fired in an oxidising atmosphere to produce an almost orange, oxidised fabric. The flange and rim are burnished on the exterior, and the interior is is also slightly burnished. This tapers out towards the base suggesting that an implement had been used on the interior to cause the wear, possibly a spoon or mortar. The flange would have been held to stabilize the bowl whilst the mixing or stirring took place. It was probably …
